Sand Hill Ra nch opened its summer stadium motocross season
tonight under the lights. As in
past years, T om Anderson has
converted his scr am bles "c orral" into a
stadiu m night motocross with tight
tu rns. fast straightaways and 11
jumps. Alt hough opening night
suffered a moderate tu rnout and
places to pass were few, no complaints
were heard a bout the prepara tion or
th e reva m ped layou t .
Rodney Sm ith was the star of th e
night bea ting ou t Robert Congdon for
th e top spot in t he Expert event. Smith
a nd Congdon kept th e crowd on the ir
feet with a wheel -to -wheel battle to the
finish . Taking the thi rd spot was
Ra nd y Den ton followed by Da ve
He rrell.
Trippe Rol off too k the top honors in
the 50cc class finishing ahead of Doug
DeLa y.
J unior J oh n Looney captu red t he
overall win in the I25 cc class . Marshall
Martinez came awa y with the top
Novice trophy com bining a first m oto
win with a fourth in the finale for
second overall. Don Beall, in third,
took second for the Novices.
Alan Loredo put together two good
rides in the O pen Novice race taking
hom e the top trophy. Dan Sou za
followed Loredo to the finish in the
second moto for the runner-up spot.
T im Seeley, after a first moto win ,
settled for third .
Mark Ibbotson combine d a pair of
second places for the over all win in t he
250cc class. Righ t be hi nd Mark
th roug hou t both motos was Rich
Powell who took the trophy for secon d
overall. J u nio r Ma rk Bagger i finished
third .
