Craig Bogle and Richard Hewit 1 exhibit radically different j um ping

techniques in their Open Intermediate race at Mulkey.
J im Anderson hunkers down
enroute to 125cc Pro w in at Mulkey.
to cross his fingers and water just a little
bit. It turned out to be a near perfect
day for motocross. By late afternoon
the larger classes encountered some
problems with dust as a result of the
light watering bu t you'd have to be a
seer to second guess the wea ther today.
The program opened with Rick
Benek (Ha n), Mike Somerville (Yam),
Allen Pitts (Suz) and Tim Michlitseh
(Yam) leading the 250cc Pros around
the bend. Somerville got in trouble
early on the third lap , dropping way
back. Michlitsch put Pitts down to
third and launched a futile charge on
Benek.
Kevin Jansen, Steve Williams and
Jim Anderson were in a real contest
over whose Yamaha was going to be in
fourth. Nobody gave an inch for
several laps , then suddenly Anderson
dove by both in a turn. While
Anderson set his sights on Pitts, Jansen
a nd W illiams started getting pushed
from behind by Clay Alar (Yam). On
the fina l lap , all th ree went by Pitts
and Al a r gra bbed t he fourth spot.
Somerville ma y have had the thrill
of his life at the start of the second
mota . He arrived at the point of the
first tum like the lead goose in a flock
then la id it down in front of everyone.
You 'd th ink one in the pack would
have had a good enough aim to nail
him, but they didn't.
Pitts took the lead briefly, but by
the third lap he was down to fourth
and on his way to a DNF. Alar took
over the top spot and ignored
everybody else. Beh ind him Michlitsch
and Benek had a real go for second
spot. It lasted most of the mota before
Benek ca me int o a comer as if he
made no attempt to stop and overshot
it clear over to the next track section.
He narrowly missed getting nailed by
Jansen when he re-entered just a head
of him .
Monte Mitchell and Rowdy Blasdell
were involved in a Husky duel in the
front of the first Open Pro race.
Rowdy cut underneath to nab th e lead
on the top sweeper then almost irnmedia tely laid it down on the drop off.
He was out for the day with a bruised
shin .
Mitchell wou ld n't enjoy the lead
long , though, because Cla y Alar
plowed right by. Positions remained
the same until the last lap when
Mitchell slid out and Chris Washburn
(Ya m) motored by.
Barney Newman (Yam) led th e
second mota while Alar worked on
ge tt ing around W ashburn. He d id ,
