Second chance'at Corona By Ron Lawson CORONA, CA , MAY 30 Remember the days when XR75s were unbeatable in the Mini class? There was a time when the question was not if a little Honda would win the small bore class, but which Honda would win, because that was almost all there was in the class . Well those days have long since passed and all those XRs have been reduced to hauling people to the port-a-cans and around in the pits. They simply - aren't competitive against the new generation of mega RPM mini screamers. But XR fanatics need not let their scoots sit in a comer of the garage and gather dust any more. At Corona Raceway the people at the Racing Association of Cycle Enthusiasts are giving the thumpers a second chance by trying to start up a class especially for them. Last Friday, along with the regular races, two XR races were run, one for riders over 15 years old and the other for riders under 15. The younger riders were topped by Ken Brown who took both motos , Gary Dent was second both times around ahead of Phil Gasaway and James Conti. The other class was topped by Andy Northrup , who usually pilots a Honda in the 125cc Pro class . Second place went to Marty Miller, another Pro, and third was taken by Intermediate KinnyJones. Although a date hasn't officially been set for the next XR race , look for them around the last"Friday of every month. The big bikes saw a long overdue 250cc Pro win go to Keith Williamson (Yam). The first moto went to Andy Orescanin (Kaw), who led all the way. Don Griewe (C ·A) was in second until electrical problems forced him back a place and then he lost another position when he crashed. Williamson remained in second for the rest of the race while Fred Conover (Kaw) netted third. In the next moto, Griewe was back in winning form . He took the lead o 00 (j) Todd Peterson leads the 125cc Pro class at CMC Ascot. when Orescanin lost a chain and held it all the way to the end. Williamson again was second, but never more than a few lengths behind Griewe. Those two seconds were good enough for the win and Griewe's 4-1 showing put him in second. Conover finished third again in the last round for third overall. Craig Dale (Hon) again topped the 125cc Pro class. Getting second. this week was Mike Edson (Yam) who topped Ryan Eide and C.J. Wenner (Suz). Results XR 75 1: 1. Ken Brown (Hon); 2. Gary Dent lHonl; 3. PhilGasaway tHon). XR 75 2: 1. Andy Northrup (Honl; 2. Marty Miller (Han); 3. Kinny Jones (Han). WOMEN'S : 1.
