They used to make their bikes look like the movies .': smiles Bob through his whiskers . "T hey've wised up. " During the chopper era there was a virtual fallout of heavy original fat bobs, fenders and fryingpan seats. All went into the discard heap as carport engineers transformed their surplus sale Police Specials into radical "ou tlaw" showtime motorcycles. All this time Bob was b uying tha t junk and preserving it in the kn owledge that tastes would surely change. "W e de-rake frames ," he bristles, showing us the steel frame jig in back of his large store on a one-block street in Gardena. CA. The store is a time tomb of flared fenders , restored relics and almost complete relics . Real parts once removed. All layered evenly with a decade and a half worth of dust. 'Some of the stock is for sale . some not. It is a wealth measured not merely in value, but also in the power to make people's dreams complete. The chopper mania has run its course. we agreed. Look. even the Japanese manufacturers have j oined the parade, with their Factory Specials. That is a sure sign that the heart corps is due for restyling. Lremember the day in 1952 when "decking and moulding" went out of the custom ca r culture. Overnight the coupes and roadsters sported their handles again , their stock. original hood ornaments reappeared in their appointed places. Something the same is happening with streetbikes today.
