T he season is just three cli mbs old a nd he has ta ken a ll th e wins in bot h classes. N ichols won th e 250cc Novice cl ass with a com mandi ng lead. H is best ti me was 14 .4 6 seco nds wh ile seco nd place Rob Fo wler's best was 15 ,9 8 seco nds . Ni chols took th e sa me amou nt of tim e to go to the lOp in the O pen class a nd 'his lead was almost as big. W ill Alford's 370c c Bult aco m ust be a ble to go up th e hill with almost no help from Will . No m atter wh a t the other ri ders do , it seem s as if t he re is a lways just a little bit m ore in th e Bu l. H e had a 12,39-sec ond run o n th e first go to put him first in the 370 class and 12 .0 6 in the Exhib it ion cl ass for a fir st and Top T im e . The closest anyon e came in the- 370 class was Mike Polley with a 12 .75 , but Alford went still fas ter o n his next run . An 11 .98 made him the on ly rider to break out of the 12s. In th e Exhibit ion cla ss he did th e same th ing and made his Top Time lead even bigger with a ride that only took 11. 64 seconds. J ames Blanton had the run that came closest to any of Alford's times. He took his 750c c T rium p h over th e lOp in 12.36 seconds in the Exhibit ion class . Blant on 1 Boston bags CMMC round four By Mitch Rorabaugh Photo by Kurt Ross MARYSVILLE, KS , MAY 11 Nebraska speedster Mike Boston totally dominated the 250cc and Open Senior classes at the fourth round of the Coors M idwest Motocross Championship a t Ma rysville . . The Kawasaki rid er snared the holeshots in all four starts and sim ply ra n awa y from his pe ers. Foll owing Boston in the Open class at the sta rt was Tulsa , OK , rider John Pittman with Dan H oover a nd J esse W essels scrapping over third . By the fifth lap , Hoover and Wessels had moved within striking distance of Pitt man and on the next lap Hoover slipped past into second place. Wess els followed suit on the following lap rele ga ting Pittman to fourth. They finished in that order with Boston win ning by nearly one-half lap . T he second moto looked just like arepe a t of the first except that Wessels led Hoover at the finish for seco nd place a nd seco nd overa ll, Pitt m an was again bumped back lO fourth a n d Boston won easi ly, eve n after fa lling whe n his fro nt tire washed out wit h the hel p of a la rge d irt clod . Boston led H oover , T im Schultz, Kevin Wagoner and T om Kuhl on the firs t la p of the 25 0cc Seniors. As Boston ro a red off withou t worry of the cho king d ust in herent with the day's dry track co nditions, Schultz fou nd a way around H oover on th e seco nd la p . On t he third la p . Kuhl dropped back as his Yam a ha' s base gasket sta rted to go away. Jon Ungerer got past Wagoner when the two tangled with Schultz as he restarted after sp in ning ou t in a tight . slick turn. At the end of the moto the order was Boston, Schultz, H oover. U ngerer, Wagoner and Kuhl. BOSlOn continued his romp in th e sec ond mota starting with the holesho t over Ungerer and Schultz , Schultz took over second before the end of th e fir st lap ; nd kept a pace nearly as fast as Boston's, but not good enough . Hoover moved past Wagoner on the th ird lap for fourth and on th e last lap came up to two bik e lengths of Ungerer. Bruce Staples was determined to hold off eventual winner Schultz in the ea rly go ing of the 125cc Seniors . On the second lap, however, Schultz worked past into th e lead and was never headed . Kurt Johnston go t off in th e second tu m , p icked it up in last place , and upon approach ing the same turn the next la p, his RM 's rear wheel sha tte red , Mark Urbach moved his Kawasaki into seco nd place on the fourth lap di splacing Staples to third . T he order of the firs t three remained to the fin ish with W ayne Ur bach and M itch Rorabaugh rolling in for fou rt h and fif th . Hoover led the first two laps of th e second m ota until Gilliard bl ew by for th e lead and win . Ri ck Richard was running third on the fir st lap until a cr ash dropped h im to last. Dennis Kracht held second for th e o pe ning two laps of the first moto until Ro ss, a tti red in J immy Ellis' PDQ leathers and jersey procured the day before at the Arrowhead Supercross, worked past him and Curtis Eveliegh for second place at th e fla g . Pos itions in the second moro for the top four ne ver changed. But Ross and Evele igh ran very close for most of the moto and in th e final tum and stra ight, Evele igh made his bid and nearly made it stick. As they flew ove r the final uphill jump, Ross kept it wired to take second place by less than a wheel. Salina racer Mark Stevens led every lap of the Open Juniors on his Kawasaki Uni -Trak. Mark Bantam ran second throughout the rnoto while A ,J. Warta moved up into third after a fifth-place start. J erry Jones led a tight group of Yamahas ridden by Paul Schartz, Bill Hinkle and Tom Bohl across the line next. The top four places in the second moto started and ended in the same positions with Stevens winning it over Schartz, Warta and Randy Holm . Bantam sta lled in th e first turn and work ed u p lO fifth place and fourth overa ll. Jones' Yamaha suffered a lower end seizure . White st arted getting around every o ne , including the leader , Hugh es, who was forced to ac cept runnerup. John Da vis took third with Greg Johnson (Yam) fourth.
