A drizzle of rain insured the dust would be at a minimum. The 125cc Experts were favored to win overall but a 250cc Novice could do it . A roar heard for a mile and a large cloud of exhaust smoke signaled the start as riders drag raced pas the old V & T train depot , hoping to be first off the dropoff at the end of the straightaway to get an edge on the competition. In 6 ~ minutes the start was over and the waiting began. Pit crews had their stop watches out and 28 minutes later Mike Darby (Yam), a 125cc Junior, was through first physically but Randy Teel, a 125cc Expert on a Sportcycle KTM, was leading on time. Starting out on the fifth row , Teel was through the pits in fifth place overall the first lap and leading the next two laps while dieing with Jim Jackson on a Husky who was a lap down. But on the fourth lap, Teel never showed up; out with mechanical problems, he walked from the back of the course. By this time most of the other favorites to win . 125cc Experts Gary Charters. Mike Cole and Bruce McDougal, were either behind or out with problems. 250cc Novice Roy Applequist rode a consistent, troublefree race to finish first overall and take home the Silver Trophy. Sunday This was the day the big guns ran , Open and 250cc Experts, and lap times were expected to be much lower than Teel's 27-minute lap on Saturday, but it wasn't to be . Gary Vanderpool on a Husky had a 26-minute first lap and a tremendous lead but seized and was never in contention again. Huskymounted Phil Douglas, the eventual winner, rode smooth and consistent with 27-minute laps like clockwork to inherit the win from Shane Hybarger, also Husky-mounted, who led on time from the fifth lap to DNF on the last lap from a horrendous crash caused by the snow which began at the end of the race. Douglas and Shane were the only riders to go out on 11 laps. Shane would have been second overall if he had taken the checkered flag. But Darrell Brown, on a Honda Shop XR500 , took that honor as well as first Four Stroke 'Expert . Husky rider Jeff Kaplan was an early favorite to win but finished third overall. second Open Expert. There were two 200cc Experts entered, Matt Collins (Yam) and D. Joyner (Suz) and they elected to run in a combined 200 -250 Expert class a nd finished first and second in that class , respectively. Collins rode brilliantly to that win with a 10th overall and Old Timer winner, Haywire Haynes who is no slouch himself, finished eighth overall and said he had diced with Matt all day and that he was "one fast kid, " An air of professionalism was added this year as Coors. numbered vests, donated by O.K. Distributors. made rider identification uniform and easy . White's Cycle in Carson City donated two 175cc Kawasakis for a drawing each day for all race entries , which made two racers happy even before the race started. Hi -Point's Bruce Young was th ere with all sorts of race goodies for th e drawing. Unofficial results SUNDAY 1. Phil Douglas ; 2. Dorrell Brown; 3. Jell Kaplan; 4. Doug Noell 5. Phoenix fast at British Columbia RR By Bruce Scho lten WESTWOOD, BC, MAY 4 The Westwood Motorcycle Racing' Association presen ted the Spring Trophy Races today backed by brilliant sunshine and in conjunction with the Sports Car Club of British Columbia as bikes al ternated with various formula and sports cars on the hilly 1.8 ·mile course. Thoughtful programming had more than half the bike heats run before any car races . And the car classes most likely to drop oil on the track were posted at the end of the day. A great time was had by all , as few bikers could blame their get -offs on dropped auto oill . About 100 two -wheeled road rashers competed for the $1800 purse. Although at a minimum , everyone got som e practice time. Tim Lloyd's " Big Bore-"sponsored Kawasaki from Richmond, B.C .. was favored to win the sidehack class . The power was there, but Lloyd and new monkey Bob Evans were boggled by poor steering. Early in both heats, Team Turtle (John Wildman and Rick Davison) secured the lead and kept it. Dave and Alex Wildman managed second in the first heat, but a later DNF allowed the Big Bore Kawasaki second overall. Crowd pleasers of the day were Rocky Phoenix and Brian Sutton. As each combined Superbike and 550cc Cafe heat was waved off, Rocky's fast Krauser-sponsored, Wasco-framed KZ1000 (headed for the June 1 National at Elkhart Lake, WI) grabbed a huge lead. In fact, by lap two of heat two, Rocky had a onethird mile lead on the field . The bike ran well as Phoenix nabbed back-toback wins , This is not to say that behind him all was peace and quiet . William Matty's Suzuki 750 turned third and secondplace finishes into second overall"and Grant Turner (N ort h Shore Suzuki 1100) combined a third and fourth for third. Bellevue, WA Suzuki'sJoe Davis made fourth overall. Always a believer in stock shocks, he fought Randy Skiver's old GS 1000 to double fourths . Meanwhile Brian Sutton and his RD400 (M.E.I. of Yak aima, WA) gave certain people heartburn . He dusted off quite a few Superbikes on his way to second overall in 550cc Cafe. Both times he followed Brian Rolls' Yamaha to the checkered. Bill Holden's 550 won the first heat , but a poor finish later relegated him to fourth for the day. Sutton zapped both 400cc Production heats. In the first heat, his 1000·foot lead was slowly reeled in by Steve Wyatt's Can-Am with hornebuilt watercooling. Sutton won by just 20 feet. He too k the second heat more easily as Wyatt DNS . Carlos Caballero put a fourth and second together for second overall . Seattle Honda's Scott Moon put his knee down one more time as he flogged the mighty Honda Hawk to third overall . In 125ccGP, young Rhys Howard led Dean Isaac's Can-Am in heat one. The order reversed in the second race to give Isaac first overall by virtue of the last performance. Mike Mayes took the Seattle Honda 125 to third on his first ride. RSC watercooling looks to be the new trick in this class. With Campagnola wheels and pink fuel lines. it may be even faster . Alan Seddon won his 250cc GP class. Peter Puhakka and Greg McRae hotly contested both races and Puhakka pven led the second race, briefly, on lap four. But the best they could do was swap second and third places and Puhakka snared second overall by virtue of his last heat performance. Bruce Lind contested the first heat on the Wasco Honda 500 . The single cylinder motor appeared tired after a winter of trail riding. So did Bruce, after a nasty sidehack crash at Portland last week . On May 18, he and others will bounce back for more at Seattle International Raceway.
