TEN YEARS AGO . Jim Rice (BSA) won the AMA half m ile Na tional at Reading , PA , recovering from a poor stan to take the lead midway through the race. Larry P a lmgren (Tri) and Dick Mann (BSA) fin ished second and third wh ile T od Sloan beat fellow T riumph rider Denny Palmgren in the Amateur race. Unlike current p ractice , only two Harley -Davidsons made the main event . The two-day, 500 -mile Green horn En duro got to 60 % of its 500 starters, and only 40 % finished. Among the en trants were Eastern enduro riders John Penton and Leroy Winters. T he East team took a one-point lea d in th e East/West Mo tocross Ch allenge's firs t round at Pepperell , MA . Californians Jim Wilson (Gr e) and John DeSoto (CZ) wer e the mo to winners, but the East took the lead with better m id -pack placin gs. Barry Higgins . (Oss), Bob Ismailof (Mai), Seppo Makinen (Hus), Glenn Vincent (Hus), Peter Lamppu (Mon) , Ron Jeckel (Gre) a nd Jim Weinert (Cl ) were the East team, and Wilson , DeSoto, Tim Hart (Mon), John Rice (Mai), Jim O ' Neal (Cl) , J im West (AJ S) a nd BilIClements (Hus) rode for the West. T he challenge was to con clude the following weekend with a race at California's Bay Mare race track. A B -yea r-old Pent on-mounted southern California m otocrosser ca me u p to th e La s Vegas area a nd dusted th e locals in a Europ ean Scrambles. The motocr osser , Marty Tripes by name, beat Casey Folks in the 125cc Expert class. David Laca won th e 250 cc class and Max Switzer topped the Open ranks. Tom Rockwood (T ri) won the weekly Ascot hal f mile Expert feature, defeating Jimmy Odom (Tri) and Dewayne Keeter (Nor). John HateIey was the Amateu r winner over Don Emde, and in a conti nui ng ba ttle in t he Novice ranks, Kenny Roberts (Suz) best ed Gary Scott (Yam). In m otocross co mpetition a t Ascot, d esert sta r Rich Thorwaldson thumped his Rickma n -Met isse to th e 500cc Senior win over Mike Runyard (Mon) . Russ Darnell sent a letter detailing his European adventures. In the Yugo slavian round of th e 250cc MXGPs, Darnell started the first moto in 41st and worked up to finish 22nd. In th e second moto Russ go t a perfect start and led the pack until he topped a rise and accid entally kicked the bike out of gear. He finish ed 18th in th e second moto for a 17th in the overall sta nd ings. Staying in Italy, Russ ended the letter by noting, "Bye the way. Rome is a gas. Saw th e Pope yesterday but he didn't recognize me . Russ ." In speedway action , "Wild Bill" Cody swept both main events at Costa Mesa .
