Christian breaks Bast's record at Costa Mesa By Ken Kellogg COSTA MESA . CA . MAY 23 To combat the gusty . cold winds on Friday nigh t. Costa Mesa created a warm' gust of its own. Alan "Crazy" Christian shattered Mike Bast 's record for most Scratch Main wins in a row (was six. now seven) . Christian was understandably nervous. he was on th e verge of breaking a Mike Bast record . something not too many have done. Before the race . Christian said he felt like he was at the N ationals; he rod" like it and won every scratch heat race he was in. In th e Main . started by flag due to a gate malfunction. Christian faced Dubb Ferrell. Brad Ox ley and Tom _ I.Burba . Alan took the start and was never really threatened though he knew both Ferrell and Oxley were hot on his tail. When he crossed the finish line first with a victorious fist raised . the fans went wild ; th e track hero had beaten the record. Alan received a well-deserved sta nding ovation and th e appalause wou ldn't qui t. Finishing behi nd Christian wer e Ferrell . Oxley and Burba . . In th e Handi cap Main . Christian rod e fro m th e 60 -ya rd lim - and in th e fina l turn . was about a half length behind leader Jeff Carmell o. With a fina l bu rst of power. Alan just squee zed byJ eff for th e win.
