With the addition of the two minutes grace period. riders who were up to six minutes late lost no route points. A few riders did make it , no table Ayers . Lojak stayed out in front of the 250cc class , a fter enga ging in an exciting battle with T ed Leimbach. Leim bach led ea rly. Lojak passed him . but then Ted cam e ba ck on the final lap and the two engaged in some intense handlebar a nd elbow banging befor e Loj ak took th e chec kers first. Ayers increased his lea d in the 500cc class. an d Roescle r a nd Fishback turned in a crowd pleaser with th eir batt le for second . Larry had ta ken the lea d but had to fiddle with his gas ta p a nd Fish back repassed . In a breat h- taking mid -air pa~ Roe seler retook the lead, but was onl y a ble to pu t a couple of seconds on his teammate. Day Three , The third da y was to be th e lon gest and toughest - twice around a new loop for a 190-mile tota l. How ever, not ing th e continuing rain , Trask's Dennis Bershaw opted to run on ly one loo p . T he sched ule was tightened up . a nd th e faste r riders found themselves onl y a few mi nutes earl y. The sect ion that ca used all the controversy was a 10-m ile stretch betw een chec ks four and five, that started innocen tly I' enough with a fe~ mil es of road. One T -intersection, !... th e one where most go r lost - 'had the trail going down a ridge to th e right , but riders reponed that there/was a well-d eveloped berm on the left and a trail that led up th e hill , but eventually disappeared . After th ey got back ont o the cou rse, riders di scovered some of th e tightest riding of the weekend , and th en th e ch eck with most a rriving three to six minutes la te. The refe ree 's basi s in extendi ng the time for th e section by four mi nutes was that the uphill led to a gravel road whe re t he absence of marking wou ld Dane Leimbach continued as he had th e pr eviou s two days and dominated th e 125cc class. Although results ar e unofficial and subject to ch a nge , it looks like Bobby Pearce (C A) and Joe Klokkevold (KT M) finish ed second and third , W ith only two points between him and his first ISDT Qualifier class win , Hyde went for it in his heat and said goodbye to Ribolzi and Penton, who were scrapping over secon d and offering each other words of encouragement. Hyde beat Penton by eight seconds in the MX . lost to Penton by two points in the acceleration test and came out on top in the final analysis by four points. Suzuki's Mike Rosso. who arrived in the pits visibly upset over the fifth check, worked his anger out on the course and set fast " time of the day for the class . Unoffi cially, he finished third and Ribolzi will probably wind up fourth . The 250cc heats were the last to be run before the rain fell , and Lojak took advantage by turning in the second fastest six laps of the day. Leimbach won his heat in eight seconds slower time for second in class , and as things stand now. the second lowest score. Fast time of the d ay was turned in by Suzuki's Jeff Fredette. one second faster than Lojak, and it appears that Fredette is third. Martin had been running third , but the 120 route points on his final score dropped him several positions, After third place. there is some confusion in the initial scoring that will have to be worked out before the results are in order. The ra in hit just as the 500cc class started its round of motos and turned the blue groove and hard pack sections of the course int o a skating rink with marbles-on -formica tra ct ion. Carl Cranke (SWM) slid to his heat race win. but the conditions kept his time down to nearly two minutes slower than those of the top 250s , (Ca rl, who lives in th e area . is a favorite of th e scoring computer. which spells his name "Cra nkeeeel") Roeseler won his heat while Fishback met with the ground several tim es (" I fell down six times and endoed once"). and dropped way back , giving up the second place he held in the standings, Ayers also met with Mother Earth during his heat race. but only once. still setting fast 500cc time, and he took the class win . unofficially by over 50 points. Roeseler appears to be second in class , but the computer tagged him with 180 route points. which the Yamaha people ' say should have been eliminated when the fifth check was alt ered by four minutes. If Roeseler is listed in second. then third and fourth will most likely be Bru ce Ogil vie (Yam) a nd Ken Maahs (H us).
