CA 90717 213-534·2311 (Continu ed from pag e 27) surprise anyone as he made his way through the crowd to ta ke the win for the first moto. Stubby Steve rode con sisen tly well to take second. Pitter Pa t, who sat in neutral at the start and watched everyone take off without him . passed enough riders to capture th ird. In moto two it was Get-Off Ga ry once aga in with the holeshot and he held the pace the entire way to win the moto. Pitter Pat , despite his determina tion to get a good start, didn't and had to wade through the pack which he did to take second in moto two despite the cons tant challenge from Rollover Rick and Stubby Steve . Pat managed a first overall for the day with his 3-2 corn bination. Stubby Steve had pulled up on the line in the second moto with three m inutes to go when he realized he had a flat tire. He rushed back to the pits, borrowed Bang Bang Bo Bo's Yamaha and made it off the line in time. Unfortunately, Bo Bo's suspen· sion, which is greared for a much heftier body than the little guy's, got the better of Steve as he finished third , giving him second overall. Jester Jerry took first in both Amateur motes for the overall. Dinky Denny made his return to th e tr ack after months of recuperating a broken ankle and made a respectable showing as he took second overall. OTHG vicepresident Lizard Lou rode well, even looked good , rode two clases and captured third. Two guest riders expanded the usually meager Intermediate class to six and th is without the presence of Lean Lenny who is still nursing an injury incu rred during the Nationals. In th e first moto , Kwik Keith grabbed th e holeshot but was bothered most of t ha t first race by guest rider ].B. Wise , who finally ga ve Keith a break when he fell. Wise came back in the second moto for a first but because it was his first ride with the club, his fourth overall didn't count for scoring. Keith ran into lousy luck in the second moto as his chain slipped off three times but he still managed a third for second overall. Relative newcomer Rubber Rod impressed everyone with a 2- I finish to take home Number One trophy. Big guy Bang Bang Bo Bo hung in there for third. First moto was disaster time for Novice Neehi Norm and Luft Larry as they collided, throwing Norm over the handlebars. He was seen frantically running after Larry who d ragged . Norm's bike a good 10 feet before finally real izing wha t that extra weight was. By the second moto, Norm's thumb was so swollen and painful that he pulled off midway through the race . Jumpin' Jack avoided problems in moto one as he took the win but made up for it in the second moto when he started down the downhill too fast , locked up his bike , stalled it , started up again behind everyone and still managed to take fift h for th ird overall. Beep Beep Bob took a respectable fourth in the first rnoto but drank his pep-up juice [i.e., beer) before moto two in which he took second for second overall . And it was Jalapeno Jose who took home the winner's trophy despite the fact that he lost his seat in the first lap of the second moto and rode the rest of the way standing up. At the end of the day , a match race was arranged between the top four riders of each OTHG class and the top four riders of comparable classes of the Old Timers MX Association , a good id ea that ended up disastrous for some. Luft Larry limped home with a totally bent-up bike after a crash in the Novice race. Amateur Du Du Dan took a nasty spill and later found out his wrist was broken. This was only the fou rth race for Dan after months of frustration and bench racing due to a broken ankle from a freak accident in practice. Dan is understandably thinking of quitting this whole bike business - unfortunately, he is not 19 with pa rents who support his hobby and his day-to-day needs - but we all hope that economics don't force him to sell his bike. Bauer, Benavidez bangbarsaf Corona By Ro n lawson CORONA, CA, MAY 9 Steve Bauer pulled off a close one at Corona Raceway, putting his Tim Buck-tuned Moto-X Fox Honda on top of the 250cc Pro class with Can-Am's Juan Benavidez taking second after leading all of round one and much of round two. . The Can-Am rider was untouchable in the first moto, taking the holeshot andllaE'T¥~~iflg·away from the rest of the pa ck . In second place in the early laps was And y Orescanin (Kaw), but he was soon passed by Don Griewe (KT M) who, in tum , crashed and gave the position right ba ck. Orescanin sta yed there until th e last two laps when Bauer came up and .fought his way int o second. At the finish , Bauer was still a long ways behind Benavidez, but in the next moto he was determined not to let that happen again . Bauer jumped int o the lead early in moto two while Benavidez started off behind Orescanin and Fred Combs (Kaw). But Benavidez was hot and he wasn 't about to wait around in fourth place while Bauer got away with the lead. Riding a little on the wild side , he got around Combs first and then set his sights on Orescanin. That battle only lasted about three laps before Orescanin gave in to the unreal pressure he was receiv ing and then in one lap Benavidez caught all the way up to Bauer. The Honda pilot had been cruising along confidently and then suddenly he found himself in second place as a flash of orange went by. Bauer instantly picked up his pace and started repressuring Benavidez for the lead. The two of them started battling hard and fast and then it all came to an abrupt halt when a lapped rider moved in the wrong direction, causing both Benavidez and Bauer to bail off. Bauer was the first man to remount and he took off while Benavidez struggled to start his bike. By the time he d id get going, Combs was right on his tail and in less than a lap Benavidez lost another position when he slipped up in a tum. Combs squeezed by and into second place, finishing there severa l seconds behind Bauer. Overall , it was Bauer, Benavidez, Combs, Phil Thorstensen (Yam) and Orescanin . The 250cc Intermediate class was almost as exciting with Todd Schaeffer (Kaw) leading the early laps of moto one until a crash gave the lead to Bryan Holdren (Yam). Holdren went on to win while Shaeffer battled with C.). Wenner (Suz), who held out to finish second . In the next round Robert Esparza (Yam) passed Dave Berger in the first lap to take the lead · and hold it all the way to the finish . Schaeffer came up in the late laps and put his bid in for the lead, but had to be sa tisfied with second. Overall, Holdren still got the win with his 1-3 score over Esparza and Schaeffer. The l25cc Pros were taken by Craig Dal e (Hon), who led both motos from start to finish . Taking second in both moros was Andy Northrup (Hon). Mike Edson was th ird. John Blood was top 125cc Intermediate, going 3-1 on his Honda. Scott Seeley had won round one but DNF the next race. Second went to Sam Ramirez (Suz) over Dave Frear (Kaw). Results MINI BEG: 1.
