Round four Oregon State National rated "too easy" By Action OZ DIAMOND MILL. OR, MAY 18 First the good news. It didn't rain in Oregon. In point of fact ·it was very dusty in spots. Now the bad news. The AA riders, to a man, said the course was too easy • event started ~ad he worked ~ little more closely WIth the club. This does It seems that most of the enduros in the West are too easy. I wouldn't know because I saw sweat and heard a lot of str~nge words , mostly from the A & B riders. Dick Burleson (Hus) said he thought the average should have been 24 mph . He was not the only one. Mike Hannon (Yam) sa id at the first gas stop that it was way too easy . He's ridden this area many times. After having covered a few endures I keep hearing this complaint . I also heard that the course could have been marked better. This again from the AA riders. No complaints were voiced by the A and B riders. As the Pros began pulling into the pits the rumors of protests filled the firs . One of the main complaints was that the AMA referee could have solved most of the problems before the 12 h .. l 'l J1 . U : ' 1I I .:' ·J 1 seem reasonable - I know how hard the Lobos worked on this one. They had a b,,;d rap two years ago when Drew Smith zeroed the course. Drew was not present today because he reinjured his wrist and stayed in New Jersey . There was some question as to how legal the gas checks were in distance. Some felt that they were in error. Asked what he thought of the run A rider John Wilkey (Yam) said that they, the double A boys, "don't get enough money doing what they do and how well they do it." The Lobos' Gary Nelson was assigned to lead me to the "crash 'n burn" areas.
