MAY 4 0 00 0') $10,000 CASH ~ & Prizes $10,000 CONTINGENCIES " JUNE 27,28,29 T he California Racing Club headed for Indian Dunes for another of their weekly Sun day motocross races, and despite the fact that promoter Jack Barbacovi had to backtrack home to get a V-Haul after his transmission went south in his pickup. the crew of the Dunes set up a beaut ifully revised Shadow Glen course for the riders to compete upon throughout the day . Taking home the biggest share of the Professional payback was Mike Brown . who took both the 125 and 250cc Pro wins on his LOP Yamaha. along with DG's Pete Sno rteland , winner of the O pen Pro class. Yamaha's Erik Kehoe was also on hand; riding in three classes. and he brought home a win in the Mini Expert class. as well as a first in the 100cc Experts. and a second overall to Brown in 125cc Pro action . The first ra ce of the morning was the 125cc Pros. and Brown grapbed the early lead. and proceeded to str etch it out throughout the moto as Chip Johnson pushed his Honda into second the entire way. Darrel Francis ran a comfortabl e third ahead of Eddie Perry, while Gary Neal crossed the line just ahead of Kehoe, who by that time had taken four separate trips int o the southern California sands of the course. Moto two was another Brown runaway. as he led Kehoe the entire way this time. A good battle developed for third at the halfway point. as Francis. Neal. and Perry traded positions lap after lap. Neal slipped past Francis early in the dice. then Perry followed and set Francis back. but soon Francis repassed both of them and went back into third. In the closing laps. Francis began to succum b to the pressure. and in one lap droped from third to fifth. behind Neal and Perry. which is where they finished . Overall Brown took the win . while the four -way tie for second was headed by Kehoe. then Neal. Perry and Francis. with Jo hnson grabbing sixth with his second m oto sixth. Next up were the 250cc Pros. and again it was Brown sweeping both motos , each time pulling effortlessly away from the pack. Bill O uellette was the closest to Brown in the first moto, as he trailed in second at the checkers. with Kun Sofka , Gary Neal. and Mike Shoem aker rounding out the top five. Rou nd two saw Shoemaker make the strongest bid for Brown . but he too came up short. and had to settle for second a head of Ouellette, Neal and Dave Haugh . In the overalls. Brown . Ouellette. Shoem aker , Neal and Sofka led the way. Peter Don Draskovich a nd Sno rt eland traded m oto wins _in the O pen bat tles. but it was Sno rt ela nd who came out with the top cash payback. as he held right behi nd Braskovich the en tire first m oto, then won the secon d while Draskovich had to work his way back from a bad start and bag third behind Ma rk White . which gave him second overall . and White was third with his 3-2 score. Mike Shoemaker tallied a pair of fours for fourth place cash. despite a flat tir e in the first rnoto , while Bob Schulz rounded ou t the top five overall with a couple of fives in his two efforts.
