My motivation is his statement, " I can tell with uncanny accuracy who the winner of a National, Trans-USA . or Supercross race will be before the sta rt ing gate even drops, " and the somewhat pretentious statement . " I guess I know more about American Motocross than anyone else. " Knowi ng that some of Jim's knowledge was gleaned from our magazine and the fact that he wasn 't actively involved in the sport du ring its for mative years. he should not have made suc h statements. I am curious as to who will win th is year's 500cc Nationa l Series: so, if Jim would care to pre d ict the ou tcome, we will start pulling photos from our files and be ready. If that is asking too much , I'll settle for the winner of the first event at Mt. Morris, PA . jim's views echo what we. at Moto cross A ction magazine have complained of in nu merous editorials long before it was fashionab le, that the AMA has done to outdoor motocross and our grass roots involvement: howe ver . his statement that bad tracks fold because spectators are more selective. is som ewhat misleading . The truth of the matter is, many good tracks and good promoters have dropped out because of the way they were handled by the AMA and t he hassle involved in dealing with them. For what it's worth . the FIM is just as bad. or in some cases , even worse . J im 's statement that only he and the editors of Cycle News attended the outdoor Nationals and the Trans-USA series, is also m islead ing . Ne ither the Cycle News nor the MXA editors can attend a ll race events because of the expense involved ; but. instead. use free lancers . I ca n recall seeing Da ve Hawkins, of Cycle m ag azine, at some of the races, b ut not a lways Ji m Ci anatsis as he implies. In fac t, had he attended more of this yea r's Su percross events, a nd more recentl y New Orleans. he would have witnessed firs t hand some of th e serious problems that Supercross is encountering and , perhaps tempered some of his statements regarding th e spectacular .. ' . .... ' - successes in terms of promoti on and attendance. Last week at the New Orl ea ns Supercross . Team Suzuki's manager . Mark Blackwell . made a stro ng statement concerning th e future of motocross. Mark attends every event and is considered one of th e spo rt 's most knowl edgeable , conscientious. and dedicated people. His feelings . like J im 's and many of ours is gen ui ne, He knows th ere are serious problem s th at must be addressed and put int o proper perspective if motoc ross, as we know it , is to continue. Right now what we need are more Mark Blackwells to help with the solutions . DI CK MILLER Editor. Moto cross Action Encino. CA Sierra Club member writes BLM I have bee n a member of the Sierra Club since 1954, and I have been very active in its programs except the en vironmental extremism which many of the Club officers promote these days . These extreme positions do not represent a consensus of the Sierra Club membership. I ha ve ridden motorcycles since 1943 . and riding in the desert is one of the greatest joys of life . The desert is for the use of the people , a nd it has great healing powers. I have examined the various plans for the Ca liforn ia desert, I con clude that the plan presented by the Outdoor Coalition is the one that I favor for myself and others and future generations . MILES L. BR UB ACH ER Pa los Verdes , CA Larry's farewell gathers comment I am writing in response to your Ma y 21 article conce rning La rry Huffman an d Costa Mesa Speedway, "Good -bye, La rry ," Rex Reese woul d ha ve people think tha t because Huffma n is not an nouncing a t Costa Mesa th is season tha t the raci ng is no t as gOOQ a reaso n to be there. In other words. the top riders are still there on a weekly basis and the competition is j ust as good if not better th an in the past. If you ask Harry O xley _ a bou t h is weekly attendance this ye r he will tell you ···· ···· ·· tl•• ···· ··· · , t hat there ha s be en a tremendo us inc rease . Does that sound like the specta tors reall y miss Huffman? Ma ybe 11 yea rs a re eno ugh for one announcer when the crowd has changed and a new look is coming int o spe edw ay. Sp eak ing on behalf of Inla nd Motorcycle Sp eedway in San Bern a rd ino we resent th e statement that there are no ot her promoters in speedway besid es Harry Oxley. John LaDouceur ha s succ essfully promoted San Bernardino. sho wing a yea rly attendance growth rate of 30%. Aft er five yea rs of operation on t he Orange Sho w Fairgrounds IMS ope ned th is season on Ap ril 16 with a sta ndi ng room only crowd of 7,000 . We have sinc e added additional grandstands to accommodate our many weekl y fans . Ask the riders and ask th e fans what th ey thi nk about racing at San Bernardino on Wednesdays a nd I think you'll find that the track is very popular. One final point I would like to make is that the short art icle about Bru ce Flanders briefly mentioned that he is no lon ger a t Ascot becaus e of a "sa lary dispute," Why didn 't th is get as much attention as Huffman's situation? It would appear that Larry- Huffman or Rex Reese is attempting to stir up hard feelings among long time friends , and I personally do not think that an em p loyee who is not re -hired for a season is worth such a long news article. . Larry Huffman sta tes tha t Harry Oxl ey "c a n be very diffi cult to work with ," He isn't h ard to work with and he is very accomod ating when asked for help . All you have to do is be ab le to keep up with him because he 's alwa ys in fifth gea r . I would hope that Harry will respond to th e a rt icle on his behalf as well as for th e goo d of speedway in th e USA . KATHERINE S. R UTHERFORD Vice Presiden t . American Raceways. Inc.
