Today marked the beginning of
a new era on the Oregon motocross scene as Mt. View hosted
the first local race held under the
AMA banner in m any years. Sign up
seemed like an endless ine of nonAMA members filling out the
necessary forms. The whole day was
off to a slow start just getting people
signed in .
Once underway, the racing was fast
and just as hot as the sun which turned
many a bare shou lder cr imson by late
afternoon . A gen tle breeze helped to
distribute the ensuing dust and kept
the temperature comfortable,
In the first 125cc Pro moto, Jim
Anderson (Yam) 'a ppea red to be in
contention for the holeshot, but at the
first turn he was too close to manever
around the tree and found no one
politely allowing him room. Tim
Michlitseh
(Yam)
grabbed
the
cherished spot followed by Jace Craun
(Han), Jody Becker (Han) and Robby
Watilo (Yam). By the second lap Jim
had moved into second and set his
sights on Tim. Lap after lap the two
stuck together as if glued, then Tim
made the fateful error. He slid out just
long enough to let Jim by for the win .
Steve Pless (Han) plowed his way
through the third. In the second mota
Jim got the scratch and just plain disappeared. Tim had to work through
the pack with Pless not far behind this
time.
Rowdy Blasdell (Hus) led the first
250cc Pro moto as Michlitseh came
around dead last on the first lap. Craig
Praus (Kaw) motored around in
second while Tim moved progressively
up the ranks, into second by the
seventh lap and finally into the lead on
the tenth. With two la ps to go , a wayward ch ain left Tim hiking up the hill
while Rowdy and Craig went right on
by. A bai l off in the second moto left
Ro wdy shaken up while the race, led
by Craig, went on without him. Mark
Hambelton (Hus) nabbed second over all with a 4-2 record.

Hooper returns to
Medford Motocross

Larry Hooper returned to his
home track to win the 250cc Pro
class at the Southern Oregon
Championship Motocross held at
the Medford Motocross Park. Larry
moved to southern California to race
the Golden State Series as well as local
southern Ca lifornia races to try to
make a name for himself, so it was a
rea l treat to have him back for the
championship.
This year's championship was a twoday event. Saturday the Juniors , Intermediates and Experts rode two motos,
Many of the 250cc Pros rode the 250cc
Expert class as a warm·up for Sunday's
Pro motos. One of those Pros was
Hooper. Since this was Hooper's first
and only appearance at the Medford
track during the 1979-80 season, everyone was very anxious to see just how
well he would do against the other
Pros who had ridden the track all yea r.

Sunday the water truck was on the
track at first light getting ready for the
day's events which would include the
third moto for the Junior, Intermediate
and Expert riders and the 30·minute
Pro motos . As the Pros lined up for
their mota, Hooper's poor finish in
Saturday's race was on everyone's
mind . Could Larry keep up with the
riders who had the track wired? Guys
like Mark Mattheison, Ray Price, Mike
Zillgitt, Randy Pekarek, Ron Haskett
and the 250cc season high point Pro at
the Medford track, Randy Amos.Running with the 250cc Pros was the only
125cc Pro, Rick Smith and the on ly
Open Pro, Rod Norstrom.
As they left the line and started
around the track, everyone's curiosity
was put to rest. Hooper jumped out in
front and was soon out of sight of the
other riders. Larry never lost the lead.
In second was Nordstrom followed by
Amos , Haskett, Pekarek, Zillgitt and
finally the two favorite local riders,
Mattheison and Price.
By the third lap , Mattheison and
Price had moved into fourth and fifth
place. On the next lap, both riders gat
by Amos and Nordstrom for second
and third. Zillgitt was also moving up
and by the halfway flag, the order was
Hooper, Price, Mattheison, Zillgitt,
Amos, Smith, Pekarek and Haskett.
The order never changed to the
checkered flag .
During the intermission, seven riders
tried their hand at the $50 winnertake-all wheelie contest. Each rider
had three tries over the very rough
wheelie course. Dave Shoemaker had
the longest wheelie, about a quarter
mile. Then Mark Mattheison took his
third try and passed Shoemaker's mark
by a mere two feet! Shoemaker had
one more run and just after he lifted
his front wheel he looped out, landing
on a big rock . Talk about the agony of
defeat! Mattheison took home the $50
and Shoemaker took home a sore back
and a bent Yamaha.
As the Pros lined up for their second
moto, everyone knew who would get
first place. Sure enough, Hooper once
again pulled away from the pack,
never to be pressured. This time Mattheison and Price were second and
third with Pekarek in fourth . Smith,
Zillgitt, Haskett and Amos made up
the rest of the positions. Haskett started
moving up on the second lap and by
halfway, he was in fourth.
Meanwhile in second and riding a
flawless race was Price. In third was
Mattheison with Zillgitt fifth. Both
Amos and Pekarek had bike problems.
At the checkered flag, Hooper was all
by himself. Price remained in second
and Haskett had gotten around Mattheison for third. Mark later commented
that he had gotten very tired, partly
bec ause of the heat. Zillgitt came in
fifth and Smith on the 125cc Yamaha
was sixth . One of the most entertaining
parts of the mota was watching Mr.
Hooper try to throw water on the
riders to cool them down. Price finally
pointed to his mouth and Mr . Hooper
made a direct hit .
