Rogers got high and dropped to fifth in tum two of the opening lap giving the lead to Bauer. Thurman blasted by Bauer in the first turn on the second lap and never looked back. Thurman went on for the easy victory over Bauer. who looked good in his first night of Speedway racing. Fass ended up third ahead of Alan Davidson. Rogers and Margo King who dropped out on the second lap. The Second Division second heat was a wild affair. At the start Wes Randolph's bike got away from him and continued into tum one with the leaders. Randolph did what any good Speedway rider would and ran down the middle of the track in between the back markers. The bike eliminated itself by falling and Randolph found out he couldn't run fast enough to keep up with the other riders who were still on their bikes. On lap two Kym Mauger was involved in a skirmish in turn two. Mauger's bike came out from under him and flipped over the crashwall. No one was injured but the incident caused a red flag . On the restart. Randolph was able to rejoin the field and went on to victory the easy way. riding instead of running. . Four riders took heavy spills during the night . Woods was the only one able to continue as Kelly Moran. Shane Hawley and Danny McNeil were all forced to scratch after their spills . McNeil was the most seriously injured and sustaining a possible broken right forearm and kidney injury. E o 00 0') 1""""4 IAbove. from inside of tum) Dave DeTemple. Danny Becker and Dave Sims battle at San Berdoo. IBelow) Tom Burba won at Costa Mesa. Alan Christian won numbar six. Woods to take second. Woods pulled back alongside De'Temple going into tum three with the two then battling side by side until Woods got by for keeps down the back straight on lap two. Woods was unable to catch Christian in the final two laps giving Alan his second win of the season at IMS. DeTernple was third with Oxley a creditable fourth on a strange bike. Keith Chrisco made the Handicap Main for the third week in a row and went all the way for his first victory. Chrisco took the lead over Jack Kee, Jeff Tomlin. Charlie Morse. Shawn McConnell and Dave Sims at the start. Sims . who was the only rider to start farther back than the 20 (he started on the 40) . went to work on the high groove and began to move through the pack. Sims looked like a sure winner until he fell in tum three while passing Tomlin for second on lap three. The ensuing scramble allowed last week's winner . McConnell. to move into second . McConnell was unable to catch Chrisco but did hang on for second ahead of Tomlin. Morse and Kee. Sims was credited with sixth. Fourthplace finisher Morse impressed officials enough with his heat and semi win that they moved him from the 10 to the 20 for the main . Mark Milazzo moved ahead of Tom Hughes and Dwight Hill on lap one and went on to take the Second Division Main. It wasn't easy for Milazzo as he first had to fight off Hughes and then had to fight off a de termined Dennis Bransford on the final lap. Bransford steadily moved from the back of the pack taking second from Hughes in tum one on the final lap. Bransford challenged Milazzo through the final lap but time ran out before he could get by. Finishing be _hind Milazzo and Bransford were Hughes. Wes Randolph . Tom Burmeister and Hill . Ed Thurman. who battled Cary Faas for the lead until motor problems beset him last week . scored an impressive victory in Third Division . Steve Rogers and motocrosser "Hollywood" Steve Bauer moved out front at the Christian and Chrisco again at San Bernardino By Scott Daloisio SAN BERNARDINO . CA. MAY 14 Alan "Crazy" Christian won the Scratch Main event for the second week in a row at Inland Motorcycle Speedway. Action got 26 underway before the start of the main as Brad Oxley broke a primary chain waiting for the start. Oxley got on a backup bike and made it back to the grid just before the two minute time limit was up. MAY 15 Last but never least on the speedway circuit. is J.C. Agajanian's Ascot. For those who are unfamiliar with the Ascot race track, it is a one-quarter mile track as opposed to Costa Mesa. San Bernardino. and Ventura's one-eighth mile tracks. Gears are lower. speeds are higher. and the action and the tension flare on Thursday nights as Speedway's most capable riders compete for the trophy and the purse. Dave De'Temple related before the race that the quarter-mile would separate the men from the boys. The first race started slowly but finished with some of the fastest racing many have yet to see. In Second Division. Marty Spellman found a track he could win on. riding a clean race and winning the Main event over Ed Thurman and Dwight Hill . In the Handicap Main. a surprising Gary Ford showed his championship style . taking the trophy over Junior Speedway Champ Lance King and Shawn McConnell who took a bad spill in turn three in the Scratch Semi-final.
