Desert Hotline cut out for them. Bill Saltzman rode a repeat of his first race with Lynn McGraw once again cutting him no slack. McGraw dropped out after the fifth loop . however. and Hoyt Statham moved into second and held it past the checkered flag. Doug Clark earned the . third spot honors followed by Ron H all and Jim Herrera. Anaheim Hi Siders GP: High time in Adelanto By J oyce M ay ADELANTO . CA . MAY 3-4 Two days of heavy racing. hosted by the Anaheim Hi Siders M.e.. saw desert and MX stars bunt helmets as seven races were run over the double MX courses and across the desert outside of Adelanto . 175cc A mateur/Expert Kevin Hopkins moved out into th e immediate lead and never relinquished that spot. Bob Balentine, riding a 175cc KTM. held onto the second spot through four laps before his machine went sour. Chris Crandall. who had been hiding in the backgrou nd behind Balentine the whole time . moved into the second overall position. Pete Postel stayed in the third slot until the eighth lap when he lost it to his brother. Bill. Russ Jenkins managed to slip by Pete on th e 10th lap .t o finish fourth. moved up from sixth on the first lap to second on the third lap, but then dropped back and finally out as his knee began giving him problems again . Chuck Pettigrew j iggled positions for the first four laps but then settled into second and stayed there to the finish . Dan Ashcraft rode brilliantly as he mo ved dead last to third overall at the finish . Terry Davis fin ished in the fourth slot while Chuck's brother. Da vid Pettigr ew, took fifth . Seniors Bill Saltzman, running as an MX Senior. took the win fairly easil y with his only competit ion coming from hard-charging Lynn McGraw. Jim O'Neal was behind Saltzman on the first lap. but dropped way ba ck after tha t. Hoyt Statham also dropped back after being among the leaders on the first lap. Bob Doig stayed with the leaders and took third with George Spellman and Nate Sciacqua finishing fourth and fifth . Dirt Bike 's Rick Sieman finished a respectable sixth in front of Dennis Rosenberg . There were a total of 40 finishers . the most of any of this GP's races . 175cc Novi ce/Beginner. Women Open Amateur/Expert. Sidehacks This race contained quite a con glomeration of riders with the lead moving from Danon Clayton on lap one to Dan Sullivan on lap two and then to Tim Sinclair on lap three. Sinclair held the lead from th ere on and took the win . Clayton had to be satisfied with second, while dependable Trudy Beck earned the women's honors. Gary Little finished fourth overall with Laird Schweikart in fifth . Eric MacCracken had the lead off the ' line with Craig Adams second and Bob Balentine third. Off the first loop. however. Balent ine had moved into second with Adams close behind. Jeff Kaplan, the " Occasiona l rider" who always does well, was running in the fourth slot. Off the fourth loop it was Balentine in the lead, but he did not sound strong. The good lead that he and MacCracken (who had mechanical problems on the back sid e and dropped out) had stretched out in front of the pack was now being quickly gobbled up by Adams. Balentine pulled into the pits to replace his missing shift lever and Adams took the lead. In the excitement, Adams' pit crew had failed to signal him in for a pit stop and he ran out of gas on the sixth lap. Ba len tine had once again taken the lead with Kaplan now in second. Ed Zarp rode a smooth, steady race. finis hing in the thi rd ' spot. Brett Howell and Ron Gibson finished fourth and fifth . Ral ph an d George W hitney were the only qualified sidehack team to still ' be running at the end of the race. They completed six of the grueling laps. 250cc Novice/Beginner Paul Palmer took the first lap in a very respectable nine minutes plus, with Verdi Kersthold right behind him . There was a continuous battle between these two with Kersthold taking the lead when Palmer pitted. It took Palmer two laps to get the lead again. but once he had it . he kept it. Roger Zela , who h ad his own battle against Grant Colbert, for six laps. until Colbert dropped out. took thi rd overall. followed by Steve Lawler and Russ Kurisu . 250cc Amateur/Expert 24 Former desert ace. now an MXer, Eric MacCracken took the lead right off the line a nd never backed off the entire 10 laps . Andy Jefferson moved in directly behind MacCracken for two laps. but then dropped out. Bruce Ogilvie gOt off in a clump of bushes on the back side of th e first loop and on ly rode fo r a finish . Groundshakers M.C . eighth annual Back to Back European Scrambles at Searchlight. "Cousin" : Chris Howard continued his control of the 250cc Expert class with commanding dual victories on the Team Valley Cycle Yamaha YZ250G. . Kevin Welch captured the Open Expert class honors in race one on the Bombardier Support/S & E Cycles CanAm 400MX6 while Sportsman Cycle Husqvama 39OCR-saddled Sid Tarbett snared the Open Expert laurels in race two. Brown had a perfect day as he wired both LeMans starts and led each race from start to finish . Team Sportsman cycle Suzuki RM125T thrower Daryl Folks badgered Brown in both bashes but the '79 MRAN 125cc high-point titlist was no match for the superlative Yamaha pilot. The big surprise of the day was Bill Hill, Jr.'s strong showing on the ultratrick Vegas Cycle Maico MC125 Magnum rotary valver. Hill served notice on the l25cc Experts that he has arrived with twin third overall . first l25cc Amateur placings. A holeshot was the hot set -up on both of the dusty fast circuits and "Cousin" Chris got the jump on the 250cc pack in both legs and was gonzo. Las Vegas "400" sensation Troy Fitch, riding a Nevada Yamaha YZ250G . ran second to Howard in the first race and closed the gap when Chris crashed on a road crossing, however, a blown fourth gear relegated him to finish in second place and prevented his start of the second race. Scott Forwood put his Team Valley Cycle G model YZ into the third place finish slot while "Super Swede" Rod Ahlstrom dusted the mothballs off his Nevada Contractors SchoollDuralube KTM 250MC5 to garner fourth . With Howard turning Ifi-rninute laps on the l3-mile course number two the race was for second place , "Movin" Marv Cha pm a n got his Vegas Cycle Maico 250cc Megaform I into overdrive and the fo rmer 125cc terror showed that he can ball-the-jack on a quart er litre machine as he bested the Yamahas of Kevin Gashler and Sco tt Forwood who finished th ird and fourth respectively. " Banzai" Steve Beck post ed a pair of very credi ta ble fift h over all, first 250cc Am a teu r finishes on the Jay's Freeway Ch evron -backed Honda CR250R. In Open Expert action, Leroy Kyger put his Valley Cycle Yamaha OW425cc kitted YZF 'int o the lead in race one. Kyger was on the gas but his potent machine was developing unknown engine problems that would drop him to a fourth place finish and negate his entry in the second race. Kevin Welch assumed the lea d and it was all orange to the finish . Hard charging Anthony Pasqualotto moved his Vegas Cycle Maico 400cc Magnum into second place and held it to the checkered while Sid 'Tarbert smoked in for third . In the second Open Expert heat Maico West/Vegas Cycle Maico 400cc Megaform I man Kevin Davis pulled the holeshot and led for three laps . Davis had 'broken bones in his right foot at the recent Soboda GP bu t re lated that it was no problem since it was his brake foot! Davis had the race in the bag but finished his third loop two minutes under the 55-minute minimum prescribed by the MRAN rulebook for a European Scramb le. Kevin was given the option to ru n a nother lap or wait until the time elapsed and chance getting passed by second place Tarbett should he also come through under the minimum. which he did . Davis elected to gas and couldn't immediately get to his pit which allowed Tarbert to torque into the lead that he held to the checkers. Davis got it back together to finish second while Anthony Pasqualotto came in th ird and Kevin Welch ended up fourth . • Resu lts COURSE 11 125 EX: 1. Benn ie Brown (Y. m); 2. D"'Yi Folks lSuzj ; 3.
