Larry Huffman?
Cost a Mesa speedway will survive. I
think he (O xley) will go on to a breakeve n point .. .
Because the wa y you h a ve been
talking, it gives the impression that
you sa y that the spor t 's su ccess is all
centered on you.
I don't want to give people that irnp ression. But I've had a bout a dozen
people corne up to me this year, saying,
"W hy a re n't you at Cost a Mesa annou nci ng?" And I expl ain to them th a t
I wasn 't asked to come ba ck ' this year.
And every one of them has sai d, " If
you 're not there, then we're not goi ng ,
because you're half the sho w."
After talking with Larry Huff ma n,
Ha rry Oxl ey was asked for his side of
th e story.
Oxley did acknowledge that scheduling conflicts was a fac tor in not having
H uffman at the Nationals last year
and at Costa Mesa fo r 1980, citing that
th e flamboyant announcer was off 10
out of 23 scheduled da tes last season .
M oney was another fa ctor, said
Oxley. "H e's become an accomplished
enoug h announcer that he can make a
hell of a lot more m on ey than I can
afford to pay him . "
The Costa M esa speedway prom oter
ex p laine d f urt her that Huffman 's departure from the scene was also on the
basis of "a presentation tha t he made
and [turned doum . It was really nothing more than t hat. " Oxley stated that
during the m eet ing both he and Huff·
man had in January to discuss the situation, th e oppo rtunity was presented to
talk about liaving Huffman announce
for th e 1980 season, but "wej ust didn 't
discuss it. "
Oxley added that, as he sees it, there
are no problems or friction that ex ist
betwe en Huffman and hims elf, saying,
"[ like La rry Huffman; [ have no
problems with La rry H uff man; [just
can 't afford L arry H uff ma n. T hat 's
why [ don 't driue a Merce des. "
Wh en asked if they will ever cement
over th e cracks tha t have develop ed in
th eir relations hip, Oxley did not make
a definitive or decisive stat ement, ex cept to say that "[ have no problems
with La rry. Hon estly, [ don 't. "
Th en, will th ere be a future at Costa
Mesa, with Huff ma n even on a limited
basis'
Ha rry Oxley rep lied: "We haven 't
slammed th e door on La rry . . . H e's the
best announcer in t he business; I'd
certain ly hire him if the conditions
were right . . . But (regarding Huffman 's
f uture at Costa M esa) I'll leave that up
to La rry. "
