Vance grabs NMRA Cajun ationals Pro Stock win By Greg Guarinello BATON ROUGE, LA, APR. 26-27 Terry Vance gave Suzuki reason to celebrate as he piloted his Vance & Hines Racing GS1100 to its first NMRA Pro Stock win at State Capital Dragway's NHRA Cajun Nationals. Vance appeared to have an easier time of it than he had at previous events this season, probably due to having had more track time . 12 " Whatever the reason , he was the number one qualifier with a 9.02 second ET clocking, Number two was "Superbike" Mike Keyte with a personal best of 9.10. The third qualifier was Chip Solly at 9.16 . Rounding out th e top four was Bob Carpenter of R.C . Engine ering at 9.18 . Vicki Farr lead off the second four followed by Richard Klie, Roger ' . Monroe-and CedricJohnson. • • • • • The first round opened with Vance taking on the Oklahoma based Kawasaki of Vicki "and Marshall Farr. Vance got out first and stayed there running a 9.00 (low ET of the meet) at 146.57 mph to Farr's slowing 11.64 at 77.25 . Next up were Chip Solley and Roger Monroe. Solley strapped a 9.18/141.95 pass on the losing Kawasaki of Monroe at 9.51 at 138.88 . Superbike Mike Keyte took his Gatornationals winn ing Kawasaki to the line to go against the Kawasaki of Richard Klie, but Klie broke handing the win to Keyte who ran a hard 9.13/141.28 · -solo. · -Bob Carpenter > finished off both the round and Cedric Johnson with a fine 9.23 /141. 79 pass over the trailing 10.01 /135 .54 run of Johnson. Round two was a rematch of the second round of NMRA's Southeast Nationals as Solley and Vance pulled into the staging beams. This time though, Lady Luck was not smiling on Solley as he broke on the line giving Terry a free ride int o the final. Vance took advantage of the situation and ran a 9.071146 .57 (high mph of the meet) earning himself lane choice in the finals . On the other side of the ladder Keyte squared off with Carpenter to see who would face Vance in the finals . Both had been running fairly ' strong and a good run was expected by the capacity crowd . However. the race was over at the tree as Carpenter experienced one of his infrequent redlight starts. Keyte ran another 9.10/141.28 while Carpenter wasted a 9.18 /142 .17 . . •• • =I"his 1eft·Vance-of·Vance.and Hines Racing in Santa Fee Springs, California and Keyte of Superbike Mike Engineerin~ in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida to battle It out for the win and points. Both men staged and the light almost turned green when Keyte was gone. Keyte lit up the red eye giving Vance a much deserved victory . The final numbers saw Terry running 9.071146.10 to Keyte's losing 9.25/141.28. With three of eight Pro Stock events complete on the NMRA schedule Keyte, Solley and Vance have all taken wins with Ed Ryan, Ron Turner and Keyte in runner-up roles. Due to this tight racing, the point standings find Keyte out front with 1351 points trailed by SoIley at 1225 and Vance at 1156. Rounding out the top five are Carpenter with 825 points and Ryan at 715. The second all bike meet of the season takes place May 24-25 at Epping, New Hampshire's New England Dragway. • •
