BLM Press Release Mendocino County Sheriff to patrol public lands Bureau of Land Management officials and Sheriff Tom Jondahl signed a cooperative agreement May 2 providing for more adequate protection of persons and property on public lands in Mendocino County. As a result of the agreement. an additional deputy is being hired to patrol use araas of the public lands, specifically Cow Mountain Recreation Area including Sheldon Creek. east of Ukiah, and Uttle Darby Env ironmental Education Area. approximately 12 miles east of Willits. A four-wheel drive vehicle for use of the new deputY is be ing purchased by the sheriff, cost to be re imbured by BlM. Patrol w ill be at irr egular int ervals with special attentio n on high use holidays and at the opening of deer season. The patroling deputy will inspect for hazardous conditions, acts of vandalism and abuse of public facilities, as well as respond to requests for assitance, advise on conditions and facilities, provide emergency medical treatment. direct and participate in search and recovery operations. Monitoring the activities of off-road vehicle users, hikers and campers is a part of the assignment . Prior to 1975, vandalism had become so prevalent on Cow M ounta in that BlM seriously considered closing the entire area but through the efforts of local ORV clubs and associations, the closure was limited to the northern half of the area leavi ng the southern portion open to ORV use on exist ing roads and trails. Rece nt ly BlM has graded the approximately eight·mile loop road which had been severely eroded by ORV use during winter rains. Green Sticker m oney is financing the de ve lopment of an ORV staging area on Cow Mountain six miles east of Ukiah. Both Jondahl and John Dutcher, BlM Mendocino Resource Area Manager, expressed setisfaction w it h the mutually beneficial working agreement coordina ting the efforts of local and federal government. 3.
