Jorski triples at OdysseyMX By Rebecca Sands TULSA, OK, APR. 20 On just about a perfect day at Odyssey Motocross Track, everyone seemed to be there for the same reason ... to winl Randy 42 Kirschbaum (Yam) jumped out ahead in the 125cc Expert class followed by Shan Niday (Yam), Alvin Myers (Yam), Gavin Punch (Suz) and Trey Jorski (Kaw). Myers, testing the Tulsa soil in a spill, lost two places as Punch and Jorski moved around. JoOO caught and passed Punch to take over third position. Niday, in second, had bike trouble and was forced to take a DNF. Jorski hung right on Kirschbaum's knobby, found his spot, passed and placed a well-deserved first with Kirschbaum second. Punch, riding third, slipped and Myers rode by to claim third at the checkers. Clay Hoenshell (Yam) moved up from back in the pack with dare-devil-fast riding and claimed fourth with Punch coming back for fifth. The second moto ran from start to finish in the same order. Jorski took a 2-1 victory in the 250cc Expert race with Hoenshell finishing 1-2 for second. In the first moto, Lance Cain (Hon) was the fastest to the first tum with Hoenshell hot behind, passing to finish first. Jorski, with a bad start, eliminated the cornpetition one by one to finish a strong second. Cain hung on to third with Bobby McDaniel (Yam) fourth . The second moto was Jorski's all the way. Capital City night MXto 'St utts By Karel Kramer AUSTIN, TX, APR. 19 Weekly motocross has returned to Austin! Lee Biggan now manages the Capital City night track and on his first week back, he supplied some perfect traction and lively announcing. Biggart made the track great but David Stutts was the man to watch! All Expert classes ran together in a single David Stutts benefit. Stutts and his 465cc Yamaha roosted the pack out of the first tum pursued by Rick Blackwell (250 Hon) and Mike Farmer (400 ,,:,\,?>,. ., • . . Blackwell fought to keep within striking distance of Stutts, but the Yamaha pilot would have none of it. Putting on a tremendous first -lap drive, Stutts literally rocketed out of .the turns, down the back straight, flying off the big jump completely sideways and landed in the sweeper crossed up and sliding. Blackwell looked as if he might gain some ground but could never overcome Stutts' cushion. Normally a 250 has an advantage at Austin, but with Saturday's perfect traction, Stutts had an advantage out of the turns , although things would even up some as thl; track dried out before moto two . Stutts again led Blackwell from the first tum as moto two got underway, but Stutts was having more trouble getting his bike to hook up this time, not getting the same drive out of corners, but holding his lead to the finish. Blackwell istayed close enough to supply some pressure but had to settle for runnerup; he was followed in by Steve Cardwell some distance back. Perhaps the finest action of the night was in the 125cc Novice classl A trio of Hondas swept through turn one in the lead ridden by Carl Beers, Sammy Rizzotto and David Morrison. Beers stretched his lead immediately but all eyes were on fourth place as Kawasaki pilot Lee Porterfield began lighting the track on fire. Porterfield had the announcer, Biggart , going hoarse as he berzerked his way around the track, diving into the turns so deep he was literally running into the back wheel of Morrison's Honda . Morrison opened the door as he got totally sideways off the jump in front of the stands. Instead of shutting off, Porterfield gassed it past him on the outside in the air. Morrison held it wide open and instead of crashing he almost passed Porterfield back! Rizzotto missed one shift on the next lap and found himself in fourth instead of second! Beers was long gone and cruised in for the win followed by Porterfield and Morrison. Beers dominated the second moto as he won convincingly over Morrison . Rizzotto was third and Porterfield had seized his motor between rnotos. Everyone got to do some fine racing and it should get better as Lee Biggart, smiling, handsome deveil that he is, has promised that some track changes will be included in his busy schedule. Ward and Norfolk score at Gypsies MX opener By Richard Creed STURGIS, SO, APR. 13 Motocross racing for 1980 got off to a mixed start Sunday at the Jackpine Gypsies track outside of Sturgis. Recent rainfall and diligent work by the course crew kept the dust under control for the 120 riders. Temperatures in the mid- to -upper 80s with a steady breeze made life pleasant for race fans. That's the good news. The bad news is that two accidents caused delays and resulted in injuries to Brad Kurtz of Rapid City and Bill Swenson of Spearfish. Kurtz was working his way back to form after a winter trail -riding accident sidelined him with a broken elbow . Sunday, a tumble in the first moto of the 125A class sent him to the hospital with a broken arm . Swenson's race day ended early in the first round of the 250B class . He came over the front straight jump with the pack and tangled with Curtis Wil· Iiams among others in an end-overend affair. Swenson appeared to be out cold , but finally got up and was assisted to the ambulance by artendants. He reportedly suffered chest injuries. So much for the bad news. Sturgis rider Todd Vissia posted the only hometown win with a first and third-place combination which was good enough for the 250B victory. Rapid City riders, led by Hondamounted Deryk Ward who scored a win in the 125A and second in the 250A, continued to dominate the winner's list, but Lee Vern Berry of Chadron, NB, and Ben Norfolk of Gillette, WY, snuck in and took the laurels in the 125C and 250A classes respectively. Although there is a motocross scheduled for the month of May, the biggest race of the season should be on June 8 when Sturgis hosts its state championship round. Over 200 riders should be • in town for that one. Results MINI A: 1. Todd Gikling (Yaml ; 2. Ladd Poitra ISuzl; 3. Berry 8OI'g..1I CHonl. MINI B: 1. Mark Mueller 1502); 2. Dennis Delson (Yaml;3.
