some discussion between riders and AMA officials. The final laps saw Shobert hold off Kidd ("I slowed down a little and started pole-huggin'." Shobert admitted later.) Briggs remained in third while Mickey Fay put in a fine ride from his near last start to finish fourth in front of Ra iney. Gennai, Jones . Poovey. Spencer and Inderbi tzen rounded out the fin ishing order. Team racing was mixed in with the program with four man races and a five points for first . three for second. two for third and one for fourth scor ing system. Teams Honda (Haney and Fay). Kawasaki (Rainey and Briggs ) and Texas (Kidd and Shobert) remained intact from the Cow Palace event. Team Yamaha was manned by J im .Filice and Ronnie Jones after Kenny Roberts returned to Europe. Cow Palace winner Team Smoke (as in "we're gonna smoke 'em all ") had John Gennai teamed with Rod Spencer in stead of Rick Hocking. The final team. Team Mexico. was composed of Da ve Aldana and Terry Poovey. Briggs of Team Kawasaki was very impressive with 20 poi nts and three wins in the five races. Kawasaki sta rted by beating Honda. 7-4 . as Briggs led Fay. Rainey and Haney across the lin e. Texas was next to fa ll. 6-5. as the finishing order was Briggs . Kidd , Shobert and Rainey. Team Smoke was th e only team to defeat the kwackers , 6-5. when Gennai won ahead of Briggs. Ra iney and Spencer. Briggs and Ra iney split wins as Kawasaki defeated Team Mexico. 8-3, and Team Yamaha. 7-4. The meeting between Team Yamaha and Team Smoke. which had the scor ing not become fouled up. would have been repeated as a run-off for second. saw Yamaha come out on top. Ronnie Jones rode to the win . followed by Gennai, Spencer and Filice for a 6·5 score. Jones added two more wins and tallied 19 points. Filice added anoth er win as they wen t on to bea t everybody but Kawasaki. After losing to Yamaha. Team Smoke went on to smok e everybody. Gennai was high point rider of the ~atch races with 23 points and four wins . Texas started off with a 7-4 win over Mexico . then lost to Kawasaki and Smoke by 6·5 scores . topped Honda . 7-4. then lost to Yamaha. again by a 65 score. Team Honda was hampered by cr ashes by Jeff Haney. including one where he highs ided while showing off for the crowd before a rac e, and they could only com e up with 22 points . T eam Mexico's problems were even greater as Dave Aldana hit the floor so often in the early going tha t he dropped out of the race and was rep laced by Ricky Resweber. They gathered 19 points. The final was between Kawasaki and Texas after Texas was mista kenl y credited with 32 points instead of their 29. The final was run right after the main event and Shobert and Kidd were as hot as the y were in the final. but in reverse order as Kidd led Shobert. Rainey crashed twice and finished a lap down . while Briggs caught his foot on a tire on the inside of the track. twisted his knee and pulled off after another lap.
