Zitterkopf, Jones and Jackson at DeAnza By Ron Lawson SUNNYMEAD, CA , MAY 4 Consistency finally paid off for Greg Zitterkopf (Mai) in the 250cc Pro class at DeAnza Cycle Park when he took two second place fin ishes and put them together for the overall win . In th e first moto , Zitterkopf sta rt ed off in ninth pla ce while Jon Friesen (C· A) jumped in to the lead with Butch Tarvin (Hon) and Danny Burtt (Yam) tucked in close behind. Also getting a poor start was Andy Kirker (Yam) who rounded the first lap in 13th place , but it wasn't long before both Zitterkopf and Kirker were moving up rapidly through the pack. On the second lap , Tarvin bailed off and Burtt moved into second. and then two laps later. Burtt moved up another spot into the lead. By this time Zitterkopf had worked all the way up to third place and wasn't about to stop there. He set his sights on Friesen and finally passed the Can-Am rider on the ninth lap. Several laps later, Kirker moved past Phil Thorstensen (Yam) for fourth place where he finished. Everything was turned upside down in the next race when Fred Combs (Kaw), who got sixth in round one, pulled the holeshot, Keith Dysert (Kaw) , 11th in moto one, was in second ahead of Kirker and Burtt. Kirker went on to pass Dysert while Burtt crashed and fell back to l Sth, T ha t moved Zitterkopf into fourth where he stayed until Dysert dropped ou t. In the laps that followed. both Kirker and Zitterkopf managed !o pass Combs and they remained 1·2-3 all the way home. Keith Williamson was founh ahead of Mike Edson (Yam) and Bunt. In the overall results it was Zitterkopf, Kirker and Bunt. The Open Pro class held the best race of the day between Greg Done and Clark Jones (Hus). Done piloted his Kawasaki to a runaway win in the first moto and then led all but one of the laps of the second round . That one lap , however , was the most important one and Jones got the checkered flag and the overall win. Brad Brown (Ma i) was third in both motes . Rick Jackson was on top of both 125cc Pro motos on his Yamaha. Varney Holbrook (Su z) was th e only rider able to keep him in sight in the .early I.aps of .moto one, but a crash put I Vacation?
