Team Yamaha came out again and Roberts won another one winning big by passing Mike Kidd with a 'crowd de cibel count nea r a million. Jimbo got squeezed in between Kidd and Shobert for the th ird and the 7-4 cou nt for a tie with T exas . T eam Smoke came ba ck in th eir next round to ice it up prelly good by taking the first two spots over T eam Gre en despite Ra iney running an outside line that j ust cou ldn't seem to work , Tea m Honda looked like they were going to break it loose as the rounds wound dow n , with Fay leading the J et . bu t Eklund made that short-lived by m ak ing a good mo ve on Haney for second and 6-5 split . Team Texas lost ground in the fourth round losing a 65 split to T eam KX when Rainey got the lead from Kidd after Bud tried the outside. The final round really got the crowd stirred up with Team Yamaha running twice. Roberts led out over Team NorCal with Eklund and Pearson doing the chasing, On the second lap. Jimbo asserted himself and Pearson lay on the ground about half way down the straight. The next lap, the red' came out, seemingly for Pearson 's safety. A complete re -start was called for, and the crowd was getting worked u p . Two laps in to the second rou nd start a nd Roberts threw it aw ay and one lap later the red was displayed. T he cro wd was up on its feet boo ing as th ey saw another complet e restart com ing. Then someon e cha nged a m ind. and a resta rt inline was set u p . On the th ird sta rt . JR got a good jump but was wide ' and passed by Eklund and KR and Pearson with a 74 score and some people wond eri ng about instant rule changes. " Team Honda came up with a big scor e for th eir final round catching up to Team Smoke with a 1-2 punch of Fay and Haney after Gennai tripped up. The final round sta rted off with Roberts leading over Rainey but Team Green got a wheel under the World Champ and got by for the lead and a 7-4 count that would put Team Smoke and Team Honda in the final and all the m arbles, • It was so late by this time that the concept may have been lost to many of the folk still around as the 12 laps went easily to Team Smoke. Gennai and Hocking, Hocking won the race with ease over Gennai with Fay taking th ird over Haney and a chance to go south and see who might like to take them on for Long Bea ch . I With KR goi ng off to Europe. one replacement to go with Team Yamaha m ight be Hank Scott who would certainly like to help get Jimbo's bike sorted out a little better as most of it is his set up. An int eresting note to the individ ual side of the Best Pa irs event was Roberts' 19 po ints as the high and Jimbo with t he low. The first three places had scores that were all within two points, and I'll just bet you that if Jimbo had a more competitive operation . it would have been a lot different. The Northern California Yamaha Dealers Association and Yamaha International put on the show that really . allowed for KR to come and ride in front of a home town crowd that really loves the Modesto-boy-done-good.
