t Howerton 141 and Warren Reid IBliead Saturday's charge. Mark Barnett tu rned in a smoot h w in Sund ay in front of a slim cro wd. eheader, Bell extends point lead Sun kept the power on to claim the lead . Bell looked to be setting up for a pass, but Shultz thought it was time to move and scraped with Bell, who went down. Shultz was on the move and stuffed Sun to the inside for the lead. His lead was short-lived when he ate it through the mud, turning the lead back to Sun. Bell had regained composure and pace and was back in third. Barnett, Howerton, Smith and Ward followed . Glover also fell victim to the slop , and then Bell went down again in the whoops . The Dome became a steady drone of high level volume from the crowd as Bell got up and put on a Supercross charge that saw him take the checkers 20 feet in front of Sun. Shultz, Barn ett and Howerton , filled out top five. "Chuck was staying consistent. He didn't know what was coming up, though . When he got in a rut he was committed and' went for broke: ' Bell said after winner's circle honors. "The way we went off the jump I was committed:' Sun said about the point Bell passed at : '" had to go in side. I would have gone outside, but Bell would have gone inside. My throttle was sticking, too . I almost crashed off the big jump two laps from the end when it stuck wide open . That was when Bell caught up ." Sunday By morning the muddy area was gone and a jump was in place. "The track is looking good - with no mud," Bell said. '" know how to ride the mud from Oregon : ' Sun said. "You just have to hold it open and stay on top of it. But' don't think it was good here for riders or spectators. It's messy and dangerous for us, and spectators couldn 't see who was who." '" just couldn't work my way up with everyone roosting me:' Howerton said concerning Saturday's race. '" had to take my gogg les off because of the mud, and then I got sand in my eyes." Bell took Cantaloupi in tow in qualifier one and it stayed, that way to the flag . Team Honda's Gibson used a fast inside line to take Cantaloupi, but then veered outside and almost fell . Ward got by to sew up third. Myerscough and Gibson took 4-5 positions. "Cantaloupi got underneath me and then Ward clipped my front tire , I had my weight to the outside to counteract and drifted out." Gibson said. Qualifier two gave the win to Glover over Sun by 10 feet. Hansen , Rakestraw and Shultz took slots three , four and five. "'t's hard to pass out there. , got close, but Broc wanted the win pretty bad," Sun said in the pits. Howerton got his body and bike dialed in for qualifier three and took it hands down. Wise followed at a distance for second, and La Porte took Moates for third after four laps of trying. Guerra placed fifth after displacing Rick Burgett. "My clutch wasn't adjusted right so I got a bad start. Burgett screwed up over a jump and I got him, but I think' would have got him anyway ," Guerra said. Reid had an early lead in qualifier four, but Barnett and then Ken Adams nipped him. Barnett pulled a long lead by the finish. Adams, Reid and Ellis got into it for second. Reid plugged into second and Ellis third. Out of no where came Tripes, who got Adams for fourth. Adams held fifth to the flag. '" got my bell rung two weeks ago and haven't been able to train - 'just hung on for fifth ," Adams said. '" passed somewhere in the back and got two gu ys. I've got to go faster - it 's taking me too long to get motivated . I need better starts," said Tripes. Smith and Pierce took semi one transfers. Weinert took an ambulance ride after a get -off in semi two during a day that saw him ride at th e rear. Rhoten was riding a mad man's pace, showing the factory stars how it's done , until he threw a chain. Burgett took a transfer with LOP's Steve Martin chasing . "We've been having a problem throwing chains - 'just threw another one : ' Rhoten said, pointing to his Honda. Rhoten blasted off in the consolation, only to throw another chain on lap four and give the win to Bill Grossi on a Moore and Sons Husqvarna. Wise, Sun, Howerton, Barnett, Glover and Bell led the 25 rider field into the final. Moates was knocked to the outside on lap one. Glover was on the move and soon stepped in to challenge Wise's lead. Bell hit some haybales and got back in behind Smith in 10th. Barnett saw a line past both Wise and Glover and used it to take a lead he would never relinquish. Glover drove Wise to the outside through a fast sweeper, and Wise went down a half lap later when he clipped Sun. The ,field spread out with Barnett and Glover coming acorss the finish well separated. Howerton won a battle so close over Sun that the two had to ask others in the pits what their placings were . "It was all real great: ' Barnett said while heading for the pits . "All the lappers moved right over. " "Once' got next to Wise my chance was gone. I spent the whole race trying to pass him , and then he fell," Glover said. '" seem to be plagued by last lap passes. The start was good, but everybody passed me on the big jump - I didn't feel like changing my line ," Sun said after his fourth place finish . • Resu lts SATURDAV: 1. Mike Bell lVam}; 2.
