I am not int erested in dest roying characteristics of the environment tha t will be impo rt ant to fu ture generations n or do I bel ieve tha t other motorcyclists are. Further. I do no t believe th a t the Forest Service would ha ve issue d a permit for the H iMountain Enduro if th at were the expected outcom e. We must manage our natural resources to the best interests of all users and potential future users. I urge you to support the use permit already issued for the Hi -Mountain En~~ro . and to actively seek opportumnes In the future to provide motorcyclists access to the National Forests. As added comment, I would like to commend the Forest Service for their participation in the Dirt Diggers Red Ga rter Enduro recently held in the Ba llinger Canyon area . Phot o by Charles Morey. 4 For whom the Balanced tolls I admire Thumper Fre ak's call to arms in you r Ap ril 23 issue , bu t it's probably too little, too la te . After attending the Los Angeles "Desert Plan" m eeting, and tal king with the Phantom Duck, it became readily apparent that the BLM committee is not about to listen to a word we h ave to say. The BLM spent mill ions fa brica ting thei r colorful littl e m aps and inventing in decipherable word s a nd phrases, and are determined to jus tify their effort by selecting one of th eir readymade' alternatives. The BLM is proud of their work and are not about to let the words of the public alter their preconceived conclusions. The BLM wants the "Ba lanced" alternative and listens to only those who agree with them . Unfortunately , the Balanced plan is extremely biased towards preservation, but has a name which will gain support from . uninformed people on all sides. But don't give up hope. T here is a way , and the Phantom Duck has it . Currently the Duck is pushing for the No Action alternative in order to ga in tim e to mount a frontal assault on the valid ity of th e BLM 's study . If the BLM decides on the Bal anced plan, as expected, the only way to prevent im plem entat ion is through a legal challenge. The Duck has the strategy mapped out but lacks the funds to pull it off . So now. it's. your tu m to help . Instead of buying that new accessory for your bike, which you probably don't need anyway, send the bucks to the Duck. What good is a bike if t here 's nowhere to ride it? Sure, the economy is in bad sha pe and times are tough, b ut just th ink of all th e good times to come in the desert when conditions im pr ove, if we can still ride th ere. Support the Duck. He needs our bucks to protect ou r future. R . KOENIG Torrance, CA Shanahan. not McCla nahan I loved you r coverage of the AFM /Honda Ontario Six Classic . However it was me "ta ngled" with Bill Silver on t he 1980 Hour who front straight at th e end of the Six Hour , not Dave McClanahan. I borrowed Dave 's spa re leathers for th e race when mine were shed ded two weeks be for e at Riverside. It appears that Bill was drafting m e, getting ready to pass , when I m issed a shift. Bill struck me from behind a n d we bo th en ded up on the ground . The la test word th at I' ve had is that Bill is doing well a t Loma Linda Hospital. I know of him as a fine racer a nd competitor and I hope he's back racing soon. TOM SHANAHAN Full erton, CA Dea r Mr. deHolI... The purpose of this letter is to ex press bot h my pleasure and concerns associated with the Hi-Mountain Enduro scheduled for May II , 1980 in the Los Padres National Forest. First it is with great anticipation that my son and 1 look forward to competing in the event. I am extremely pleased that the Forest Service has issued the permit for this event. It represents an opportunity for us to ride new terrain and to benefit from your management of t he National Forest. As you are aware, enduro competition provides for opportunities to enjoy the scenery as well as to be involved in competitive riding. I represent a small group of 29 regular family enduro riders called the Guajolotes, of which four are already preentered in the Hi -Mountain Enduro. My son (12 years old) and I compete in about 20 enduros each year which provides us with a very enjoyable mutual interest and camaraderie. I'm sure that we will both benefit beyond our immediate enjoyment during the coming years. Most recently, we have expanded upon our in terest by starting a small bus iness to provide computer products and services ' for motorcyclists and by helping wit h the organization of several enduros. Secondly, I am very concerned about efforts by the Sierra Club to stop the enduro from being run . Their irrational belief that all activities must be halted in order to retain the important natural aspects of our world is just as faulty as the wanton destruction of all natural resources that they A few yea rs ago , som eone said that to control the people, get them int o the cities and keep them there. Now it would appear that is exactly what is happening. Wi th the California Desert Conservation Area Draft p roposa ls, the Wilderness proposals and the fuel and economic problems, it appears that we really are being forced to stay in the urban areas . At no sm all expense, a lot of families enj oy off-h ighway vehicle a cti ~ities . But whe re are they to go? Having to hav e a full -time job to support their families. 30 % tax bracket, a nd off-highway vehicles , the tim e :ond money required to go out of state 15 unreasonable . The California public lands are less and less accessable to and for OHV use . The National Forests, who claim multiple use, and the Bureau of La nd Management are closing m ore an d m ore areas , weekly, to OH Vs and are enlarging Wilderness areas . We should save a portion of this beautiful state; however, like our money, we should save some and use some. For healthy mental attitudes , people must have pleas urable activities an d freedom fro m everyday pr oblems. For the most part, OH Vers are har~.wor~ ~ng, law -abiding, taxpaYIng cmzens who aree more than willing to share with the "conserva tionists" who wish to see all the land saved and protected, except for their own particular use . If we want somewhere to play, we must unite, by writing letters , keeping inf? rm~d regarding legislators . and legislation. and attending and offering imput to public hearings on land use. We must get and stay involved and support those people, politically and financially , who are attempting to help the OHV people: Bob H ayes, CORPAC , and t he Phantom Duck (for a start). But the largest part is up to us, who bel ieve strongly that we have the right for consideration of our needs . We should stop feeling guilty because a few people go out in off -h ighway vehicles and do bad things, because the "conservationists" certainly do not feel responsible because of some atrocities committed in Wilderness areas - for instance, garbage and trash strewn around an d hundreds of fire pits in a previously beautiful, undisturbed m eadow in the Sierras.
