Mosier slipped past the next lap with Gerig still in tow. By lap five Mosier and Gerig had moved into the second and third positions and began to heat -up Marino's rear fender. Two laps later Mosier slipped around Marino for the lead but Marino determinedly hung on and regained the front position as the race entered the final stages. Gerig was next'to try his hand at the lead but his charge fell short and he dropped back to third. Mosier reached way down deep into his Mikuni and came up with a few extra ponies and he wheeled his KX past Marino for the final time. At the checkers it was Mosier , Marino and Gerig and that was the overall order as well with fourth going to Mobs . The 250cc Pro race was laden with top local talent including Pete and Tony Wanket on their MX Fox Yamahas and a bevy of DG·sponsored riders like Pete Snorteland, Lance Moorewood and eventual winner Jim Tarantino. Tarantino shot quickly into the lead of the first moto and he never let go of the front running position. He had his hands full holding off the charges of Moorewood and Pete Wanket but Tarantino kept the slide pinned to the top of the carb and danced his Honda to the checkered flag. Tony Wankel had mechanical problems in the first moto but came back to holeshot the start of the second. Tarantino settled in behind Tony as Pete Wanket followed in third. On lap four Tarantino squeezed his way around Tony and set his sights on victory . The Wankets argued over second place for most of the race with the nod going to Pete while Moorewood worked his way up from a bad start to finish fourth and clinch third overall behind Pete Wanket and Tarantino. Kawasaki rid ers Bill Keefe and Steve Banning rode to consistent placings and finished .fourth and fifth overall respectively. Results Hand Washable Sta y Soft Othman D is tr ibuting Co . The 125cc Intermediates attacked the track with the fury of a hurricane. On the start of their first moto the first 10 riders were inches apart. For the first part, Gary DaPillo (Suz), Mark Fowler and Suzuki-mounted Mike Raines ran a tight three- man formation. . Raines had worked his way up from the back of a field of over two dozen racers and was on the attack. Radical Iead changes took place and Ruben Torres out of Norwalk Yamaha took charge, leading Yamaha riders Gary Reichenbach and Vaun Butler across the line at the end. When their machines came to life the second time around , Butler was in control. Raines and Torres followed in close for second and third respectively. ' Leaving the pack to their own madness, Butler pulled away and into a beautiful lead, nipping on the heels of lapped riders. Torres took over second and Reichenbach moved into third: When the checkered flag waved them home , Torres maintained second, good for the overall win . Ron Turner, riding for Suzuki, met with Pete Snorteland in the Open Pro race in a head-to-head battle that was to continue through both rnotos. Turner battled to the end for a brilliant pair of back- to-back wins. Snorteland wound up with a 3·2 second place over Mike Shoemaker (2-3) . Jim Tarantino (DG Hon) led the 250cc Pros up the hill, on his way to the overall win. He had Tim Locey, riding for Yamaha , burning the rubber off his rear tire until a get-off left Locey with a broken leg. Tony Gomez eased on into second and was closing on Tarantino, until he went down in a spectacular over the handlebars bailoff. Ron Turner was now in third and going for it . By the rnoto's end, Tarantino was still in command, Lance Moorewood had moved into second and Turner took third. When the gate dropped for the second round , Turner .was ready and flying: He had Tarantino in second, being hounded by Moorewood in third and Mike Shoemaker holding down fourth. Two time-honored duels went down throughout the second moto. Turner and Tarantino for the lead and Moorewood and Shoemaker for third. With Castonede ISuzl; 2. larry Bladt IKawI; 3. Dave Perry ISuz). Nearly 300 show at CMMC Bobby Sullivan benefit By Rod Eschenburg SAN DIEGO, CA , APR. 20 In a day filled with great racing and 'a ppearan ces by many of the southland's-top motocross stars, the outstanding performance of the day at Barona Oaks Raceway was still by a young man who did not race. Bobby Sullivan not only made an ap· pearance on the race day especially for him , but also stayed for the majority of the program and participated in the drawings at intermission as well as visiting with his many friends who were there. While over $7200 was raised to help Bobby with his medical expenses, the real plus was the tremendous boost given Bobby by the sight of so many friends who came and competed in the near 300-rider entry field . That kind of a show of enthusiasm, emotion, and just plain best wishes has just got to helpl Three special Pro classes were run Sunday: 125, 250 , and 500cc, with all three pairs of motes looking like Superbowl qualifiersl TCW rider Mike Tripes grabbed a close one over 1980 CMC 125cc Pro point leader Rick Johnson (Yam ) with Suzuki rider Scott Burnworth a tight third and a sensa tional fourth place ride by 1979 Barona Oaks 125cc champ David McGhee. Twenty-one riders answered the bell for the 250cc Open class, and it turned out to be the race of the day with a three-way tie occurring after the second moto , In the first go· around it was Scott Burnworth (Suz) all the way followed by a storming Clint Hardick in the second position. Mike Tripes wound up fourth behind an inspired David McGhee, who had the ride of his life for third.
