Rakestraw, Wedding, and Spencer take TMA series opener By Charlie Wiese ROCKWALL , TX, APR . 6 On a windy day in North Texas , the Texas Motocross Association's (TMA's) 12-race series got underway with some fantastic racing taking place on Rockwall's GP ·like cir cu it . With a rider turnout of well over 300 , the spectators got their money's worth as the day's racing ended with some exciting Pro battles as Mark Rakestraw (Hon) , Derek Wedding (Hus) and Kirk Spencer (Yam) took home top honors. Keith "Tiger" Foytik (Suz) aced the Min i Junior competition with a pair of brilliant rides. Peter Thornfield (Suz) was a distant second with a 2-3 tally as Upshaw came back for a brilliant second-round ride after an early soil sample. Upshaw was third with a 5-2. record as David Barnhill (Yam) rounded out the top four with a pair of fours. Mini Seniors moved d in next as Bryan " Boom Boom " Abernathy (Yam) managed the overall with 1-2 finishes . Round one had Abernathy on top with "Killer" Carroll Richardson (Yam) pursuing before the "Killer" took an unexpected soil sample that left him in fourth by mote's end. Jeff Barker (Suz) moved up to second with Bryan Yelton (Yam) a close third. In round two, the "Killer" came back. with a wire- to-wire victory that moved him to second in the overall column as " Boom Boom" held on for the overall by taking a second. Yelton was third at the end of two rounds with a pair of threes. . The morning program ended with two one-lap trophy dashes for the top two finishers in each class. The Min i winner was " Boom Boom" Abernathy who took the lead as he. "Killer" Car- roll and "Tiger" Foytik crested the hill on the final straight. The tri o finished not more tha n a bike length apart with Abernathy holding th e e dge as he crossed the finish line out of shape but still on the bike. The "Killer " and the "T iger" followed. "Ra mblin'" Ray took the big.bike trophy dash as he powered his way to th e front with " Big Mac" pressuring Neal to the finish . I25cc Pro action followed with Mark "Peaches" Rakestraw (Hon) coming out on top of the star-studded event with a fine 2-1 performance. First -ro und win ner, Dennis " Ma x" Brand (Ya m ), had the spectators bitin' at the bit with some tight ra cing taking place in the final round that ended on the last lap when "Max" dumped it allowing " Peac hes" to take th e moto win a nd t he overall. ':Jam mi n'" Jimmy Martin (Hon) was third each time as "red rock et ace," rookie professional Rodney Wiginton (Hon), rounded out the top four with a fine 5-7 performance. Derek Wedding (Hus) took top honors in the 250cc Pro class with a pair of qu ick and consistent rides. In round one, Wedding raced awa y from the field as "Magic" Monte Anderson (Yam) pursued and finished in second with Kirk "The Kid " Spencer (Yam) a distant th ird. In round two "T he Kid" said "good bye" to the crowd on lap one as he set a pace that enabled him to win easil y as Wedding held on to th e overall in second. "Magic" Monte dropped out of contention with a fla t rear tire after suffering a flat front tire that slowed his charge in round on e; the touch of magic just wasn't there . Dennis "Skylab" Hawthorne (C·A) inherited third place honors with Robbie Pannell (Bul) rounding out the top four slots in the action-packed event. Open Pro action had "T he Kid" continuing in fine form to take both rounds. In race one, Spencer and Anderson continued their weekly battle as they slipped away from the field as the pair hooked up for a battle that never came to life . At about th e halfway mark Anderson began missing gears continually allowing Spencer to hold a comfortable lead for the duration. "Magic" Monte's luck went sour again - as he rounded the final tum , his transmission went belly up . Spencer won easily , Anderson coasted across in second with Darrell Hollingshead (Suz) in third. Round two was easy pickin's for Spencer with Anderson on the sidelines. That left Hollingshead in second after . battling with David Greenhill (KTM) who was followed in round two and in the overall column by Skipper Franks (Yam) who looks quicker with every outing. • o 00 (j) ...-4 GET OFF 10UR CAN.
