Ariz We s tern hotline ;I ~ t o 00 O'l (Above) John Wincewicz won the Expert/Junior combined main event. while Junior Rich Arnaiz (below) was fourth. (File photos.) Wincewicz runs wild at Ascot HM By Maureen Lee GARDENA, CA , MAY 2 The track was in super condition Friday so it was a pity so many riders missed it by getting a head start to San Jose, saving 26 their mount for the Mile or just not willing to do the wrenching to change a Friday night half-miler into a Sundaymiler. Juniors and Experts were combined so there were three heats and two semis , with two transfers from each. It was a night of riders trying to beat out starter Rick Houchins, who never gets rattled and he was more than willing to pu t the very bad boys all the way back on a brand new fourth penalty line way behind the customary third. John Wincewicz got away first in the first Junior/Expert heat but Houchins didn't like the way he'd done it and out came th e red flag. W incewicz again got the lead tailed by Rich Volk, Rich Amaiz, Mike Inderbiuen and Steve Karsten. Wincewicz built up a nice lead and the time turned out to be the fastest , a 1:56.27, with almost the same finishing order except Arlette Smith drove past Karsten to finish fifth . . The next heat saw another red flag as Triumph-mounted Tom Berry arrived in the south tum way ahead of the others followed by Bob Sanders on another Triumph. Berry had to start on row three and Sanders led the way followed by Steve Oort, Craig Arm strong and Dennis Camp. Camp passed Armstrong, only to drop out and coming up fast was Berry. Sanders kept the lead and Oort his second but Berry emerged third while another comefrom -behind-rider, Bob Cunnington, got fourth . Ricky Resweber took off with the lead in the last heat , ahead of Brian Haycock, Danny Perkins, Jeff Allison , Steve Polson and Dorothy Rowe. Junior Haycock on a Triumph went after Expert Resweber and his Harley and what a go those two had. They swapped the lead at least 10 times before young Resweber crossed the fin ish line first at the flag . Not to be outdone right behind were Danny Perkins, then Polson, Allison and Rowe. In the first semi Arlette Smith had mechanical difficulties on the line and although they tried to fix things there was an official decision that there was too much oil on her rear tire and it was no go for Arlette. Despite a row three start, Danny Perkins still went steaming off with the lead never to be passed, with Rich Arnaiz next, then Bob Cunnington and Dorothy Rowe. Rowe passed Cunnington but couldn't hold the position and finished first alternate, nicely ahead of Craig Armstrong. Early in the second semi the rundown was Tom Berry, Mike Inderbitzen, Steve Karsten, Steve Polson , Jeff Allison and Rich Plueger. Berry just charged along, building up his lead and Inderbitzen settled into second spot. Polson gassed it by Karsten and went after Inderbitzen. On the last lap Karsten came off turn four hard with it well pulled down but Mike still had the edge at the finish flag . Fastest time of the evening belonged to John Wincewicz (22 .69) so he had die pole in the dash next to Bobby Sanders and Juniors Rich Volk and Brian Haycock. Sanders, Wincewicz and Volk went through the south turn side by side, then Sanders got the lead for a bit 'til Wincewicz took over going down the back chute and went on to win. Trophy girl this week was charming Renee Rainey (Wayne's sister) presenting the KRW helmet. For the I5 ·lap main there were six Experts and four Juniors. Wincewicz and Sanders arrived in tum one first, but Sanders got into a bit of trouble and some of the pack got by. Ricky Resweber was then second over Tom Berry, Sanders, Rich Amaiz, Rich VolIr. and Danny Perkins. Brian Haycock had to drop out and Perkins' usual come-from-behind attack didn't keep going long. After passing VolIr. he got slowed down in fullllight when his leg kicked back up around his ear and cooled him down a bit. Arnaiz tried out Sanders for a while too and Inderbitzen was going after Volk , but both tries were unsuccessful. Wincewicz was still making trail out front and Berry decided he'd had enough of following Resweber, and passed him in the south tum. Ricky came zooming back trying to regain second by the inside line down the back chute but Berry wasn't having any, closing the door and holding onto second until the finish . Bob Garrison couldn't start the Novice main so' Bud Carroll got his spot and away they went, Pat Seigle leading, the Mike Hale and Chuck Montgomery. A few laps into the race Hale had the lead and Bill Scott, who earlier set the fastest heat time of the season, had worked up to second, then Seigle, Montgomery and Chris Cannon. But with four laps down things happened quickly when Jeff Johnson got off down the back straight, and Montgomery and Mearl Barnett got off too, becoming involved with Johnson's loose bike. Barnett got a ride in the ambulance, and the other two got dusted off and back over to the single line restart. This time Scott took off with the lead, with Hale running close to him, a space and then Ross Klatt and Pat Seigle tailed by Chris Cannon, completing the procession to the finish flag with no time due to the crash.
