12Scc MX Series
(Continued from page 11)
Moto two saw Everts grab the holeshot from his newest challenger, but
Zijlstra was way down in !16th position
after a first lap crash and the chasing
group was headed briefly by Frenchman Jacky Vimond, the tall Dutchman
Groeneveld and Torao Suzuki. Vel·
keneers forced past Everts on the third
lap, as Groeneveld demoted Vimond,
who was also caught by a surprisingly
lively Walter Kalberer before crashing
out of contention.
By lap six Suzuki had been relentlessly squeezed back behind Rinaldi,
Rahier and Autio, but the real danger
man was Zijlstra, driving superbly
through the pack after his early fall.
At half distance Everts was losing
ground to Velkeneers, but on lap 10
climbed right back on terms with the
Yamaha and retook the lead, only to
succumb to a spirited counterattack as
they swooped into the penultimate
lap. This time the champion had no
answer and Velkeneers took the flag
for a fme victory.
TIle midfield batde was equally rousing, as Rinaldi, hampered by a foot injury sustained during training, lost out
in rapid succession to Autio, Zijlstra
and, on the final lap, Rahier. Zijlstra
also stormed past Autio with a lap and
a half t6 go. As they erupted into the
arena, the Finn's Honda stepped out
of line over a fast, ramped jump and
he crashed horribly, fortunately with·
out serious injury. That left the Dutchman to an unchallenged fifth spot and
the plaudits of his home crowd.
