Conway cooks atSRAGP By Sue Senn RIVERSIDE, CA, MAR. 30 Southland Racing Association created an entirely new course over the much used Riverside Raceway. This, plus the half hour start delay due to a water truck being stuck on the course, had the Seniors more than antsy by the time -the green flag dropped. Dallas Baker went out early with transmission problems, but Charlie Conway (KTM) still had his hands full with Lynn McGraw and Bill Manley. Charlie's riding ability speaks for itself, but intentionally or not, the man is i ham on the course. Although they finished in the above order, Charlie gave his fellow Experts many chances to take the lead. Top Amateurs were Ed Shinault. Phil Lawrence and Richard Prouty. The Novice win went to Harry Thornburg, followed by Cliff Stevens and Mike Gaines. Top Beginners were Jack McCafferty, Jack Baird and Everett Tafoya. The leaders on the first lap of the Open race were Rich Bland (Mai), Keith Fearing (C·A) and Craig Adams (KTM). These three put on a terrific show for the first three laps, then Adams was struck by the old "break plague" which has eliminated him all year. At this point, Bland moved out all alone and Fearing, sponsored by Performance Cycle, moved into a comfortable second. Behind the pair, many battles were going on. T,imbo Hall, third, and Paul Huffman, fourth, were demonstrating how to c'hange places in tight turns while maintaining upright positions. Lee Evans, Jeff Bowles and Hobart Bowers were top Amateurs while Eric Evans, Joel Shedden and Billy Nash were top Novices. Beginners were T.R. Roberts, Don Farley and Joe Goodhand. The 81·200cc race has the reputa· tion for producing excitement plus, and Mark Cook, Donnie Morrison (Yam) and Bill Holmes (Hus) live up to this reputation. For the first three laps, Cook and Holmes were each making a big for the lead. Cook went out with mechanical problems and Holmes was joined by Morrison. Morrison later commented, "Bill is so strong, I didn't think I could get around him. but I did. He made it a good ride." Taking third overall, first Amateur, and putting on a fine ride, was Mark Heth. Mark belongs to the East/West M.C. and is aided by Bill Walters Leathers and Shoei Helmets. Second and third Amateurs were Kenny Guyett and Ken Kendrick. Top Novice riders were John Penner, Rick Webb and Willy Banuelos. Lee Patten, Eddie Shinault and Dan Sullivan were top Beginners. The 250cc race usually belongs to Craig Adams. This one was claimed by Mike Baker after an hour of Ii terally side by side dicing with Adams. The lead these two had over Phil Thorstensen, Steve Glatts and Scott Kinnier was incredible. The pair stayed side by side through hay bales, ribbon; whatever with Baker having the slight edge all the way to the finish. The top three Amateurs were Karl Davis, Greg Johns and Norman Francis. For the Novices, it was Charles Montilepre. Marty Gomez and Eric Evans. Top Beginners were Chuck Hermansen, Ron Herman· sen and John Esposito. The mighty Minis concluded the individual races and the overall went to Barry Crawford. Dave Trager took secom:l followed by Shannon Shamblin and Keith Senn. Bryan Metzger and Jeff Frazier were top Novices while Eric Metzger, Raymond Amery and Brian Pollock were top Beginners. The overall in the team race went to the Open team of Craig Adams/Keith Fearing, after a switcharoo lead with the first 250cc team of Larry Thompson/Mark Cates. Third overall went to the first 81-200cc team of Donnie Morrison/Mark Heth. First Mini team went to Keith Senn/ Dave Trager. Second Mini team went to Barry Crawford/Kevin Richey. SRA commends Keith Senn, Barry Crawford and Bill Jarvis for stopping to aid an injured rider during the team race. Senn summed it up when he said, "He needed my help more than I • needed the win." -r~O" 350x21 Bridllestone Rimsaver , . -rJ~ $17.95 , YOKOlfA_A ~ Goodyeer MX II SERVIC~'Z~LE YOU $39.95 cY FROM MINI TO MIGHTY ALL TIRES DISCOUNTED ~ ~.l.S'" HI·POIIT &)I -«'I GOODlf;rEAII whenY~b~~jhistjre!
