SAN DIEGO, CA, APR_ 6
Yamaha Motor Corp. rider Ronnie Lechien went six for six at
Barona Oaks Raceway, sweeping both the Stock and Modified
Expert Minicycle classes and the special
105cc Minicycle class.
Lechien's domination was so complete in all three classes that the only
racing was for second with Kenny
Dunlap edging Billy Evans in the Stock
class and Evans taking a tie-breaker
from Dunlap in the Modifieds and top
Intermediate rider Richie Dobbs grabbing a tie-breaker second from Dunlap
in the 105cc Minicycles_
Dobbs continues to impress. and
though it will be a while before he
moves to the Experts, it looks as if he
could handle 90% of them right now.
The 12-16 Intermediates were a compete romp for Dobbs. as no one was
even close in any of the Stock and
Modified motos_
In the 125cc Expert classes David
McGhee ran his usual strong race for a
two for two sweep of the Stock division,
but in the Modified he had trouble in
the first moto and finished third with
Tim Hale grabbing a close win over
Mike Monsegur. McGhee came back
for a second moto win, but it wasn't
good enough as Hale once again outdueled a persistent Monsegur for
second and the class win.
After sitting out a year at Barona,
former Mini Expert rider David Crowson returned with the motorcycles and
grabbed a hard fought overall win in
the 125cc Stock Intermediate division.
The 125cc Stock Novice field was 20
strong, with some very fast riders like
Arni Lemon. Alex Leon, Dirk Doucene, Randy Rush, etc., but when
the checkered nag fell in each moto, it
was second race rider Guy Schmidt out
front and long gone.
The always tough 9-11 Intermediate
Minicycles lived up to their reputation
once again with Scott Brown, now a
R&D Suzuki charger, edging Frankie
Brundage in a tiebreaker for the Stock
honors. The Modifed division was a
"Ripley's Believe It or Not" as Brundage emerged on top of a four way tie·
breaker with a 4-1 finish effort over
Thor Bjornestad (3-2), who in turn
edged Brandon Schneider (2-3), who
tripped up SCOtt Brown (1-4)1
Barona Oaks' new Beginner class
produced another great race with a
large field of new riders with Mark
Scott taking a 1-2 effort to the top
spot; Tim Nash in for the show position
off a 3-1 go; and Geroge Hart taking
third with a 2-3 effort.

must of taken awhile for them to drain
the water out of the tracksl Tonight
marked the return of R.A.C.E. motocross racing at OCIR and this season's
opening crowd was really something to
boast about.
The Pro turnout was great. Todd
Peterson of DG Performance Specialties got it on in the 125cc Pro event
and his closest competitor was another
fine rider, Doug Dubach. Doug was an
easy second the whole time except for
when he fell in the final moto, Dubach
was hauling past the grandstands and
got too radical while coming off of the
next off·camber jump. He hit the
ground and this gave Mark Denning
second place in this moto and on the
money list- Dubach was third overall.
The most successful Pro of the night
was Tim Lunde ofT&O Yamaha, who
tried his skill in the 250 and 500cc Pro
races. This meant that he didn't even
have time to catch his breath because
the 250 and 500cc Pro races were back
to backl Lunde blew them away in the
250cc Pro race with two first place
wins over Keith Williamson and Curtis
Rough_ ,
As they held the starting line up for
one moment, Tim Lunde loomed
back over to the gate for his 500cc Pro
race. The guy had so much dynamic
energy tha t he was su re to get a holeshot and two first place wins for the
overall win. Brian Ellis on a Maico
took the second place honors over
Mike Lillevig.
At the same time that the 250cc Pro
riders were on the track, the 250cc
Intermediate group was let loose. Now
we all know that Warren Reid is tearing up the world on his factory Kawasaki. But did you know that he also has
a fast brother? Wayne. happens to be
'his name and he dusted the night's
250cc Intermediate pack. There was
quite a three way battle for first place
though and Marc Crosby took the first
moto rights while Gary Lower snuffed
them in the second moto. Reid was
most consistent and he took his Yamaha to a second place spot in each case
while he styled around with an old
FMF jersey on his back. When every·
thing was tallied up it was Reid in firstahead of Crosby and Gary Lower.
