Canada ·Northern California-Northern Nevada-Oregon-Washington-Idaho-Utah-Alaska-Canada -Northern California-Northern Nevada-Oregon-Washington-Idaho-Ul pulled away on lap three. Freitas caught and passed Chandler for the lead on lap six, holding on for the win with Chandler second and Carr third. Scott Casey took the win in the 80cc Junior class with Jason Paoli second and Ron Hanes third. Roger Freitas, riding his first race, took the 80cc Novice win over Mike McDonnell. The 80cc Expert race promised to be a battle between Freitas and Chandler. Aaron Hill grabbed the holeshot with Freitas and Chandler close behind. Freitas passed Hill for the lead in tum three but Hill regained the lead coming out of four with Chandler back in third. The three went into a come,r together with Freitas and Chandler both passing Hill down' the back straight. Freitas and Chandler battled to the wire with Freitas taking his second win, Chandler second and Hill thrid. Brian Sansing and Jamie Mason had a good one going. in the 250cc Novice final. Sansing led all the way to the last lap with Mason close behind. Sansing bailed off in tum three and forced Mason up high enabling Mike Smith to go under for the win. Mason reo covered for second with Steve Mitchell taking third. The 250cc Junior main event was a two·man battle between Tony Holdsclaw and Dave' Walden. Holdsclaw was able to overtake Walden on lap five and went on to the win. Gary Roehlk was third. The 250cc Experts pulled to the line next for their main. Alex JorgfOnsen was the first into the comer with Scrog· gins and Bill Scott in tow. Jorgensen and Scroggins began to pull away on lap two. A three-way battle for third developed between Scott, Doug Chandler and Rich Arnaiz. Scott led going into tum three with Chandler inside him. Arnaiz went for it underneath Chandler clipping him and they both went down. The first three spots were now secure for Jorgensen, Scroggins and Scott as they pulled away from the field. Church takes Sparkplug Enduro By EIRae Morgenthaler BELFAIR, WA, MAR. 30 Steve Church on his new YZ465 dropped only two points to best the 240 riders en tered in the Sparkplug Enduro, second event on the Northwest Motorcycle Association-Trail Division schedule. Only three points separated the top 15 finishers at the end of the well-timed 64-mile course. Excellent tight woods trails :.... around and under rhododendron, through thick, low salal so dense one could hardly find the tail and through young tree farms with just enough road sections to help make up a little. time - made for a good day's ride on 15 and 14 mph averages. Two clubs dominated the top places. Mt. Baker M.C. wi.th a large contingent of riders came aw'ay with the first three trophies and placed six in the top 15. The other strong showing was the Bell's Angeles M.C. who came with four riders and placed three in the top 11. Although well-marked, early event jitters claimed many riders in the first few miles and many were back at the stan after only a. few minutes had passed. Because of the tight trails, the organizing club, the Bremerton Cruisers, tried a new approach to start times. They ran eight minutes of four riders to a minute, then a space of four empty minutes. This, coupled with the willingness of the slower riders to allow faster ride.rs to pass, prevented bottlenecks in the tight woods secti.ons. The final check had all the good riders checking through six minutes late. Upon investigation of the prob· lem, it was discovered that although timed for a 15 mph average, it was posted as a 15 mph average. Rather than adjust the scores to reflect the 15 mph average, the check was thrown out. As at the Coyote event a' week earlier, new young riders rode and timed their way to the top spots. My guess is that names like Dana Johnson, Wayne Keezer and Dave Jones will be right up there with Oyler, Bethards, Church and Brown when the season is over. Trophies were presented to top finishers regardless of class. Results 1. Steve Churck; 2. Mike Rosser; 3. carman Bunker; 4. Devid Jones; 6. Wayne Keezer; 6. Dana Johnson; 7. Charlie Bethards; 8. Bumett doubles at Porterville, sets track record By Bob Hill PORTERVILLE, CA, MAR. 30 Everything that gets sidewa'ys on two, three or four wheels showed up at Porterville Sunday. The Spinners have been rained out twice this year and the track has been under water all winter. The site of the 1979 Short Track Nationals was a new track last year and is also cushioned. This year they swept, packed and swept again to make one of the best-grooved, full one-quarter mile short tracks in the state. District 55 now has a track where DTIs and RAXs work and cut cushion tires don't. The track changed .all through practice and the heats. By the time the mains were ready to start there was a wide blue groove. Blayne Hollenbeck (Fosters FreezeSumners Suz) had it dialed in the 80cc Expert heat as he le~ from start to finish. He came back in the main, invened the start and did the same thing with Buddy Wilson (Eddie'nJoes Yam) behind him all eight laps. Steve Hill (Target Sales-Clarks Yam) and Ryan Land (Pizza Hut-Yam), despite getting bad starts, worked their way through the pack to grab third and fourth at the checkers. Hill came back in the 100cc Expert . race with another Hollenbeck to race. Ricky Hollenbe.ck (Fosters Freeze· Sumners Suz) got the holeshot with Hill right behind. On the third lap Hollenbeck missed a gear and Hill was right there with an outside pass in turn one. Hill stayed in the groove and pulled away for the win. The 250cc Expens were in full force with a lot of fast people, Number One Mike Garrison, Pete Hames, Rob Ely, Steve Monger, Scott Cude, Chad Bettencourt, Leon Verburg and Jim Towes to name a few. Nobody bothered to tell John Burnett how fast all these guys were. Garrison (Garrison Roofing· Yam) got the holeshot with Burnett, Hames and Monger in hot pursuit. On the thinllap Burnett (Fresno Kawasaki) got a wheel inside Garrison in Tum Three and had the lead coming down the straight on lap four. Hames (Bills Pipes-Yam) then put a move on Garrison in the same comer the next lap that had to be seen to be believed. Hames got a wheel inside Garrison going into Turn Three that lasted into Turn Four. Neither rider gave an inch and there couldn't have been three inches between them but Hames had a 'bigger part of the groove and Garrison slipped into the marbles with Hames and Monger getting by. In the meantime, Burnett was showing just how fast the factory Kawasaki could go. Burnett turned a 19:75 lap on the sixth lap. On the white flag lap he turned a 19.72. The old track record set last year by Doug Garrison was 20.05. Special thanks should go to D-55 Congressman Don Jennings. Jennings has been clocking all the races in D-55 this year and the stopwatch tells the real story. Burnett came back in the 500cc Expen race to make it two wins for the day. Burnett rode a Joe MilIerbuilt and tuned Yamaha 500. Derek Land, riding a Muzzy-built Yamaha 500 was 1'n it all the way but Burnett was right on all day. stretch his lead as both the Farias got by Tavis. Dave began making moves on second but threw a chain in the final lap and at the finish it .was Jorgensen, McGehee, Mike Faria, Tavis and Eklund. Jim Hanbauer cruised for the heat race win in the Vets/Old Timers race and seemed bound to repeat in the main event. Mike Underhill changed the plans a bit as he got by Hanbauer in the sweeper and rode flawlessly for the remainder of the race for the win. Hanbauer held onto second with Bill Evans iI). third. Mike Crosby finished as the top Novice in the class. Underhill's bid for a double victory came to an end in the Open Junior race when he went down in the far corner dicing for the lead with Joe Heckmann. David Lehman moved into second and gave chase to Heckmann but also met with the ground in the same comer a lap later. Heckmann cruised in for the win as Lehman recovered for second. Ken Klein grabbed the 250cc Novice win as he ran away from the field. Mike Chauncey was on his way to a strong second place but Ron Dinapoli closed. the gap and finally passed Chauncey to snatch the second spot. Frank Madrid and Robie Roberts battled for the lead in the Open Novice race with Roberts, on the Honda 500, coming out on top. Madrid followed in a close second as Herbie Simon took third. SHR scrambles victory to Jorgensen By Roy Hartbauer BRENTWOOD, CA, MAR. 28 Alex Jorgensen again overcame the competition as he rode his 250cc Can-Am to victory in the combined 250cc/Open Expert main event at the Sand Hill Ranch snambles. Jorgy topped some of the best this week as Steve Eklund was again on,hand along with some of Nor Cal's top locals on the Friday night course. Alan McGehee led off the starting line of the main event and it seemed that the Can-Am-sponsored rider had it all together. Within two laps, however, Jorgensen had moved into the lead leaving McGehee in the all-toofamiliar second spot. John Tavis held down third as the Faria brothers, Mike and Dave, both got by Eklund moving the ch;lmp into sixth. Alex began to 80cc NOV: ,. T. Acres ISuz): 2. C. Plain IVaml; 3. R. Yamaha factory motocrqsser Rick Burgett took. the winner's share of the Pro purse. Burgett got away from the LeMans start next to last but managed to move out front on the second lap of the two· hour race. Doug Raines rode hard in second and managed to slip by while Burgett pitted for gas. His lead was short-lived, however.
