outhern Nevada-Southern Call
Junior Cycles. Truly the outstand;ng
performance of the 200-plus rider day.
It isn't often that Yamaha Motor
Corp. rider Ronnie Lechien can go
two for two in the always tough
Barona Expert Mini competition and
not be the outstanwng rider of the
race meet, but that is what happened
Sunday as the "Flying Scott" Brown
was just that great!
After three races at Barona Oaks for
the 1980 season, the 125cc Expert
motorcycle score is Mark Howell 2,
David McGhee I: In the first program
of the year, Howell and his Yamaha
blasted McGhee and his Kawasakj two
for two; in the second program McGhee
got himself a new Yamaha and did a
two for twO job on Howell; then
Howell returned for another double
victory. It wasn't all fun and games for
Howell this time though, as- "Howlin'
Mark" had to come from behind for a
tie· breaker over McGhee in the' Modified class and hung on for the Stock
win over McGhee with a 1-2 effort over
McGhee's 4·1 go; the fourth place resulting from a crash.
The 125cc Intermediates featured
two wins by second genera tion racer
Steve HitL Hitt, whose dad "Gentleman
Jim" H;tt was one of the all-time greats
in the EI Cajon Stock Car Racing Association, "retired" from the Minis a
couple of years ago, returned to Barona
late in 1979 with the motorcycles and
has been up front in nearly every race
program since.
Moving back to the Mirus, Charles
Osterday had a big day with wins in
both the Stock and Modified 12-16
classes with a I-I blast in the Modifieds
and a 2·2 finish squeaker over Mike
West's 4-1 effort_ In the Novices a
popular win was scored by Lance
Barnett; his first ever win with a 4-2
tie-breaker over Jeff McCoy's 3·3 in a
wild 12-16 Modified Novice class.
And finally, CMMC President Bob
Hale's promotional campaign with the
half-hour TV show on the Saturdays
prior to a race date has been really
paying off with an average of over 200
entries per program this year, even
with some strange weather conditions.
Witness eight Pee Wees in that formerly anemic class with Jamie Conney
going two for two over Dennis Dahlin
and Travis Redd who had a tiebreaker blast with Dahlin's new Italjet
prevailing.

All last season, Terry Kizer's
laydown·framed Kawasaki "2"
was stacking up the mammoth
pile of points that crowned him
king in the tough Pro Competition
class-even though he was
narrowly beaten at the IDBA
Wrrld Finals by another Kawasaki,
ridden by Jeff Masters. All Jeff
rould say was, "Maybe next year."
And you better believe him,
'cause he's got the bike to do it.
With Kawasaki, there's no way the
good times are gonna pass you by.
