athern Nevada·Soathern California- Arlzona·Soathern Nevada·Soathern California· Arlzona·Soathern Nevada·Soathern Call second with the Maico of Mike Wickersham of S.L.O. Phil's Racing on his tail. Gambetta pressed Sturgeon and took the lead. Wickersham followed, as Sturgeon appeared to be having bike problems. Jannings worked his way back to third, but had trouble again, relinquishing the spot to Tim Dias. Gambetta and Wickersham placed the same in moto two, with the Bakersfield Yarnaha of Darren Oliver taking third in front of Dias. Hanford Suzuki rider Jon Nelson won the I25cc Pro class after a hard riding 3-1 finish. Mark Bledsoe (Yam) holeshot the first gate with Chip Johnson putting his Honda in front off the tower jump. Eddie Perry (Kaw of Goleta) fought a strong battle for third with Chip Chapman (Hon), using the sandwash for his pass. Johnson, Bled· soe and Perry ran tight down the back straight with Bledsoe jumping back into the lead on the return. Coming out of the wash, Perry took over and held it to the flag. Johnson had trouble and dropped back while Nelson won a heated battle with Chapman for third. Chapman took off with a strong lead off the second gate, while Johnson and Nelson tossed second back and forth. In the final laps Nelson got the edge and started closing on Chapman. With the wave of the white flag, Nelson gave it everything he had and got by for the win, Johnson took third followed by Chris Bercaw. Perry recovered from a bad start to finish fifth. .In the 83cc Intermediate class, Andy Ellis put together a pair of flawless rides for the day's win and a move to the Expert class. Bobby Simons and David Seekins finished behind Ellis the first time, while Steve Van Dusen and Lance Johnson put it all together out of the second gate. Results 500 PRO: 1. _ GImbella (Yaml; 2. Ronnie Dansto'd I~jl. s.- Miller. mas terful at Old Timers MX By Bob Alloy VALENCIA, CA, MAR. 16 Forty-three of us handsome and fast Old Timers showed up for the beautiful summer-like weath· er, and of course MX races at the International tra.ck at the Dunes. There were 21 races all totalled which gave us plenty of time ta relax between races. Marshall Jennings of the Masters class began things by t~ing the holeshot. This lead was taken over by "Movin' Marv" Olsen after the first lap. After this it was all Marv right to the finish. Ron Miller had a lousy start but overcame it and pulled a nice sec· ond. Blackie Lewis was there to take third place honors. Moto two gave us lots of action. First it was Blackie in there out front. Then Olsen took over for a while until lap three, when Miller decided to keep the lead. So it was Miller for first, "Movin' Marv" in sec· ond and Blackie Lewis taking third. In the Expert division it was Richard Lyons who took the holeshot in moto one. However, Gerald Hutchinson was the first man to cross the finishing line. J.D. Bray came in with a well-ridden second place. Cal Browning and his Can·Am worked well together and consequently, they were there for third place win. Knowing how to handle th.ose deep sandy whoop-de-doos helped DIck Mosley wrap up first place in moto two. Lyons followed Dick with a second place win, and Hutchinson was in there for third. George Separing of the Amateurs just took over things. He was in there from stan to finish. Ron Clawson didn't let Spearing have an easy go of it as he was right there on Spearing's rear fender just looking for a chance to pass. That chance didn't materialize, and it was a second for Clawson. Jerry Scott did a lot of throttle twisting and good riding and came in with the third place win. Fourth place was won by Gabriel Gutierres. Clawson rode even better in moto two and came up in first place. Scott was there for the second place win. Taking third was Hal Grady and the fourth place win was John Webb's. The winner in Novices was once again Bob Anderson and his Yamaha. Bob won big and took first in both motos. Carl Wyatt, a new member, took second in both motos. Nice going there, Carl. Larry Caldron gassed his Suzuki 125 in there and was rewarded with third place in both motos. Results MASTERS: 1. CRC Budweiser/ Yamaha Series MX:Twomore tor Breker By Lee Taylor ORANGE, CA, MAR. 23 A stiff breeze, hot competition and stout hearts made up the third round in the California Racing Club's Budweiser/Yamaha Series, culminating at Indian Dunes in the annual Dunestown Race. The 125cc Pros took all of Saddle· back by storm with a brilliant piece of racing. Bruce McDougal (Hon) charged off the line at the start of the first moto in command, only to find heavy traffic from the rear and Bob Kline, blasting away in second on his Kal-Gard Honda. A pile-up of assorted machines and riders claimed McDougal, setting him back in the pack. That resulted in a duel between three old racing buddies, Kline, Johnny Whelchel and Willy Simons, that carried them down to the . . .... 1-0 0.. < CRC double winner Goat Breker pursues Mike Shoemaker. finish line. Whelchel, aboard a Yamaha for International Yamaha, simply blew everyone in the weeds in his bid for the lead. Making his way past Simons and Kline, Whelchel set up a beautiful lead. When the moto wound down to a close, Simons was fly· ing in second with Kline pushing hard in third, Andy Northrup in fourth and McDougal hounding him in fifth. The second time around, McDougal once more blasted off the line with Simons badgering him and taking com· mand. With Whelchel in third and Kline running fourth, McDougal was fighting for a lead again. Easing his way back up in front, McDougal spent the remainder of the moto fighting Simons off in second and Whelchel in third. When the winning 'flag came out it was McDougal first across the line, good for third overall. Simons steady in second and taking first overall and his pal Whelchel finishing the moto in third and taking home second pla~e money. Goat Breker burned up the track in the Open Pro race with a brilliant pair of back to back wins. He started out in fourth in the first moto with Peter Snorteland blazing off the line in the lead. Snorteland not only had Breker back there to push him but Tim Locey as well. A battle royale developed between these three with Breker and Snorteland taking on the track wheel to wheel and handlebar to handlebar. Breker's Kawasaki thrives. on Saddleback turf and was eating it up, taking over the lead. When the finish line loomed into view Breker was there for the moto win with Snorteland in second and Locey holding down third. When the engines came to life for the second time Snorteland again led the way up the hill and found Yamaha rider Zoli Berenyi in second. Berenyi took over the lead with Breker egging him on at every turn. With heavy dicing between the two of them, Locey and Snorteland kept the pressure on. From second on back the pack was tight and pressing each other to the limit. Breker made his move, took com· mand and left Berenyi to cope with . Snorteland. With wheel to wheel action between the two of them over most of the track Snorteland grew impatient and slipped away leaving Locey in fourth. to pressure Berenyi. When the race finally drew to a close B~eker was there for top money of the day, Snorteland took home welldeserved second place money plus his Yamaha bonus of $100 and third overall went to Locey. Breker also took back to back wins in the 250cc Pro class. Throughout their first mota, Mini Intermediates Mike Healey and Scott Brown, riding for Yamaha Motor Corp., took each other on in a duel over second. Kawasaki rider Todd Campbell took command' from the start, on his way to back to back wins. The second time around, Campbell once more led the way leaving a battle between Healey and Brown for second. Brown finally broke away and went after Campbell but was held back in second. When the checkered flag waved them home, Campbell led the way across the line for top honors, second overall went to Brown and third to Bobby Moore for a 4-3 ride. • Results 60cc NOV: 1.
