The big story 10 years ago was the Mint 400. and the motorcycle win went to Mike Patrick and Phil Bowen, who rode a new Yamaha ~60 MX. It was the second year in a row that the pair had won the Las Vegas desert classic. Second went to the Husky-mounted duo of Whitey Martino and Malcolm Smith, while J.N. Roberu and Ham HaDIIOn recovered from two flat tires to finish third on their Husky. Yamahasponsored Lan LanlOn and 19-year· old AI Baker won the 250cc and under class. Among those competing in the event were motocrossers Tim Han and Gary Jones, and flat trackers Eddie Mulder and John Hateley. The controversy over who won the 250cc Expert class in the Gripsters' Elsinore GP continued. Malcolm Smith was considered by many to have won. The~ were letters to the editor saying so. and someone who signed himself "A Rider and Truth Lover," bought a full· page to tell everybody that Malcolm won. At an AMA Pro half mile at Arizona's Manzanita Raceway, rookie Expert Dave Aldana (BSA) was the winner in front of Men Lawwill (H·D) and Shony Seaborne, who rode a never· say·die BSA Gold Star. The Amateur (or Junior class) winner was Randy Ellia, the Novice winner Gary Scott, and Eve! hine! entertained the crowd by jumping I~ cars. That's the order they finished (first through fifth) in the Open A division of the Alligator Enduro at Daytona. Five privateers that rode Husqvarna 390 WR's because they wanted to win. CMC brought its six-race Hallman Series to a close at Fontana, with Mike Runyard going six for six for the day in the 250 and 500cc Senior classes. Bultaco-mounted 125cc Junior Dave Rodgen won his class at each race to earn the top series award. a 125cc Penton. Winner of the 250cc Junior class in this final round was Ossa pilot Rex Staten. Celebrities slated to appear in the upcoming Cycle '70 show in San Francisco included Joe Leonard and Men LawwiU. Explorer Post ~05 hosted a motocross race at Fresno's Dunlop Cycle Park. Gary Bailey designed the course the Friday before the race. then went out and won both the 125 and 250cc Senior classes. In a CMC motocross at Helvetia Park, Brad Lackey rode a 125cc Sachs to win the 250cc Senior class, while Bob GrOlli took an appropriately sized Husky to the 500cc Senior win. In the Texas Motocross 'Championship eries, Wyman Priddy extended his class lead with a win in the Open class. The Honda·sponsored Police Memorial Poker Run in Los Angeles drew 700 riders. Sun Valley's Jim Hampton won the poker competition with four fours. cause they're on the factory payroll ... we figure that Dick Burleson's 6 AMA National Enduro Championships on Huskys probably had something to do with the fact that Henry, Dennis, Dean, John and Jim bought Husqvarna 390 WR's ...
