SAN BERNARDINO, CA, MAR. 9
On a hot and sunny afternoon in
front of over 4,000 fans, San
Bernardino began its speedway
season with some very impressive
racing. The track was kept in good
shape. the crowd was responsive and
the riders were ready for some all-out
racing.
The high point of the afternoon was
a pair of special two-lap match races
that had Alan "Crazy" Christian win
over Bruce Penshall by just a few feet
in one spectacular event. Under 21
World Finals winner Ron Preston lost
an excellent race to Bobby Schwartz.
In the Scratch Semi, Gene Woods
hit the wall in turn four after cracking
a few ribs on Friday night, but showed
he couldn't be stopped and came back
to take first place in the Scratch Consolation over Denny Pyeatt and Kelly
Moran who was fourth in the world
last year.
Keith Larsen won the Scratch Main
in the Support class over some fine
riding by Keith Chrisco. These are two
names to look forward to in the future.
John Cook rode a flawless race from
the 30-yard line to take first place over
Penhall and Schwartz in the Handicap
Main. Christian turned on the speed to
win over Penhall. Sigalos and Preston
in the final event, the Scratch Main,
ending a perfect day of speedway
racing.
