Bull Haynie whipped 100 Novices for the second time. this time in his new black. yellow and.red leathers. Winston Pro Series riders Gary SCOtt. Garth Brow. Ronnie Jones. Lance Jones. Bubba Rush. Billy Labrie. Scott Peanon, Corky Keener. and Phil McDonald headlined a field of 162 riders for the Expert/Junior event. New York rider Jim Costello voiced a popular complaint. "With gas prices what they are why do we have 10 drive 200 miles up and down Florida. The Jacksonville race should have been first. " Novice Johnny Cooper and William Herndon got by Haynie in the first semi and Mike Cole hustled by Thomas Watson. Ross Klatt and Rage'!' Durkee to score in number two. Haynie darted into a quick lead in the main event and left Cooper. Cole. Billy Reed. Herndon and Bill Russell to decide second place among themselves. Cole surged ahead on the third lap. but had to withstand a onetwo punch from Herndon and Cooper to take second at the flag. Expert/Junior Forty-four qualification and program heats eliminated more top ranked rides than you would espect to see at a Regional event. Kidd's Dicky Powell prepped Honda topped Scott Pearson. David Jones. Ricky Farrington and Junior Rick Amaiz in the first semi. 1979 Novice of the Year Jim Filice led Bill Labrie and Wayne Rainey to the second semi win. Goss fakes Pepsi Challenge ha'tmile By Mike & Anne Adair JACKSONVILLE. FL., FEB. 29 Harley-Davidson factory star Randy Goss survived an accident plagued Expert final to win the Jacksonville Pepsi Challenge Half Mile stop on the Harley-Davidson sponsored Dirt Track Series. California's riders. Tom Walton and Rich Arnaiz swept the Novice and Junior events. at the Larry and Bob Janell promoted, newly renovated New Jacksonville Speedway_ The short half mile oiled clay circuit was wide and fast. but numerous holes took their toll of the 284 riders and affected finishing positi.ons. NOVIce Ross Klatt dove into tum one with Sammy Potter, William Herndon. Walton and Mike Cole all going for it. Cole took the lead, but Potter and Walton got by and then tangled up in turn two. Potter got off hard. Walton said. "He caught a rut. lost it and came into me. I was lucky." On the restart, Walton's Jack Dannenburg tuned. Harry D. Foster sponsored Yamaha led all the way. Klatt moved by Cole for runner-up. followed closely by Tammy Kirk. After kissing Miss Sure· Fire. Linda Wilds. Walton said. "I've nner raceil a grooved track. it's different and I love it." Junior In the Junior division scratch heatS'. Jimmy Filice and his factory backed Yamaha 500 single became an instant crowd favorite. Announcer Daye Despain touted the San Jose rider as. "The next Kenny Roberts." In the final Fi!ice lost the turn one battle to Todd Smith's Tex Peel prepped S&S Racing Harley with Arnaiz. Donald Nannery and Sal Hoffman in the hunt. Ventura Harley-Davidson's Arnai~. who finished second in 1979's 250cc Novice road race at Daytona. made his move for the win on the inside of turn three. Arnaiz praised his mechanios Tony Gutierrez and Gene Arnaiz and said. "I can't believe how big racing is here in the east." Expert Goss led the all Harley-Davidson main event show into turn one. but DavidJones and Bubba Shobert found more traction and took over. As the two raced wheel to wheel, Jones fell in turn three. Shobert ran over his bike and catapulted over the hay bales. Goss said, "It looked bad. the two were right together." Houston Shor.t Track National winner Ronnie Jones parked his Harley and rode to the hospital with his brother. Shobert said. "Get it ready," but with bent forks, there was no way. Billy Labrie led the restart. but Goss went inside and came out a winner. Labrie said, "This is a long series. the track was rough and I'd rathe'l' have the points than the hay bales." Scott Pearson. riding painfully with his Ocala injuries, finished a strong third on Larry Johnson's Harley.
