On this stan Spencer didn't wait for anybody as he roared into the lead past Pons on the banking and immediately began to open up space at one second or better per lap. Pons. Single· ton, AbIand. Van Dulmen, Romero. Crosby. Ted Boody. Marc Fornan and the rest followed. Pons quickly moved to secure second place and leave the fighting for third behind. A swapfest began in earnest as Romero was banging on Van Dulrnan, who in tum was challenging Singleton and AbIand. Then John Long began to move in. Ted Boody was showing fire as were Pierce and Eddie Lawson while Bettencoun was sneaking past them. By lap 14 Spencer was up eight seconds and turning consistent l!.05's on every lap to open an ever increasing margin between himself and Pons. However. Pons also had an advantage and he was slowly creeping out away from any threat. Romero pushed his Busch Special onto Aksland's rear wheel and remained there probing for an opening. Single· ton was also challenging until he got loose in the horseshoe and lost about SO lengths on tbe duel for third. Lap 15 saw Romero get by Abland in the chicane with Aksland returning the favor on the banking. 8ettencoun, seeking to move up two positions from ninth, took an outside line into tum one and ended up tumbling in the grasa for his efforts. On lap 18 Romero tried an outside move on Aksland in the same spot and ended up with the Ame results. In two more laps it was Eddie Lawson's tum to become the third victim of tum one. All three were taken to the uack halpital for observation. Two more laps and the top 10 consisted of Spencer with a 16 second lead over Pons, ;who held about five seconds over the freight uain of Ab· land, Van Dulmen. Long, Crosby. Fontan, Singleton. David Aldana and Boody. Pierce. Cooley and Jones were filling the next three positions. Gas stops began on lap l!4 with POIII
