On this stan Spencer didn't wait for
anybody as he roared into the lead
past Pons on the banking and immediately began to open up space at one
second or better per lap. Pons. Single·
ton, AbIand. Van Dulmen, Romero.
Crosby. Ted Boody. Marc Fornan and
the rest followed.
Pons quickly moved to secure
second place and leave the fighting for
third behind.
A swapfest began in earnest as
Romero was banging on Van Dulrnan,
who in tum was challenging Singleton
and AbIand. Then John Long began
to move in. Ted Boody was showing
fire as were Pierce and Eddie Lawson
while Bettencoun was sneaking past
them.
By lap 14 Spencer was up eight seconds and turning consistent l!.05's on
every lap to open an ever increasing
margin between himself and Pons.
However. Pons also had an advantage
and he was slowly creeping out away
from any threat.
Romero pushed his Busch Special
onto Aksland's rear wheel and remained
there probing for an opening. Single·
ton was also challenging until he got
loose in the horseshoe and lost about
SO lengths on tbe duel for third.
Lap 15 saw Romero get by Abland

the favor on the banking. 8ettencoun,
seeking to move up two positions from
ninth, took an outside line into tum
one and ended up tumbling in the
grasa for his efforts.
On lap 18 Romero tried an outside
move on Aksland in the same spot and
ended up with the Ame results. In two
more laps it was Eddie Lawson's tum
to become the third victim of tum one.
All three were taken to the uack halpital
for observation.
