THEYrS SUSPENSION
ISSO~
rrs UKE DIALING
FOR DOLLARS.
By Keith McCarty
If you're the kind of rider
who likes to tinker and tinker
with his suspen ion, the 1980
YZ's may be a big disappointment. One of the YZ's most
sophisticated and efficient
features i its simplicity.
Not only are the front
forks and remote-reservoir
Monoshock really easy to
adjust, but you'll be surprised
how little they need to be
adjusted after they're set
up right.
SOME GOLDEN RULES.
Yamaha riders won the 125
class and swept the first
three places in the 250 class
of the tough CMC Golden
tate Series thi January.
Seven races. Six different
courses. Two cia championships. All on production
Monoshockers using the same
ba ic suspension etup in each
race. You'll find the winning
numbers on the chart.
These setups seem to
work for just about everyone
bigger than Tom Thumb and
smaller than King Kong. No
matter where or how they ride.
So they hould work for you.
GO BY THE BOOK.
Before you tart dialing in
these numbers on your front
and rear suspension, read
your owner's manual thorĀ·
oughly and pay careful
attention to the break-in
instructi ns: line up the red
mark on the Monoshock
rebound dampening clicker
(1) with the mark on the eye
mount (2). Then ride normally
(that means not like Bob
Hannah, but not like your
grandmother, either) for six
to eight hours.
Finally, line up the yellow
mark on the clicker with the
mark on the eye and you're
ready to start dialing for
dollars.
The newremote-reservoir
MOlwshock has been reuer.;ed
in the 1980 YZ's. This allows
easy access to the rebound
dampening and spring set
length adjustml!1lts.
