Mt. View Mud Series offers variety By Jan Newman SANDY, OR, FEB. 24 The founh race of the Mt. View Winter Mud Series almost ended up without mud! The early morning skies threatened to tum 44 into the type of day California has recently experienced but after an early drizzle, things brightened up into a great day. A lot of guys who took one peek then burrowed back into their pillows were sorry by noon. The 125cc Junior class offered some of the best racing of the day. Doug Godfrey (Yam) made his first appearance after a long recuperation from a knee injury. Doug led both motoa but soon found that his desire outdistanced his stamina by a mile. Harry Cummings (Suz) took to the front in both motos, pushed hard by Arlie Kibble (Hon). By the flag in the second moto the two were side by side with just half a wheel length or less giving Harry the overall. Frank Botts and Dub Hayes, both on Hondas, divided the wins in the 250cc JunioTS. Dub took the one that counted most without even crashing. John Kelly's fourth place finish put him in the lead for the YZSO which will be given away to the point leader at the end of the series. Lyle Schoppert (Mai) was another returnee after months of recovery.' Lyle was hurt at work, though, which should be an unpardonable sin for a motocrOlser. For a while it appeared his absence had not diminished his style. He won the flI'St moto and was leading the second when he pulled into the piu. Daryl Semmler (Yam) took home top brass. Mixed classes have been added to give the guys another chance at a trophy and pit their talenu against the guys on other bike sizes. Harry Cummings on a Suzuki 125 took the Junior win. Craig Bogle's Yamaha 465 earned him the Intermediate win. In the second moto Ron Long must have thought he was a bird. He came off a small jump aimed a full goO left of the direction he should have been headed. He soon discovered he couldn't fly but he rolls pretty good. At the end of the day they held a '0 minute Grand Prix where you "run what you brung". Intermediates were handicapped one lap and Pros two laps. Craig Bogle (Yam) led the entire '0 minutes with only Craig Roberu (Hon) and John Kelly (Kaw) making the entire 16 laps with him. When the smoke cleared and the laps were adjusted for the handicap, John was the winner. Two races remain in the series, March 16 and '0, the latter dat(' is the make·up date for the race cancelled in January when Oregon had its weather problems. R.sults MINI EX: 1. S-leichnor (Vern).
