Two heats and a semi made up the staning field for the 250cc Money shon track: The main saw Ross Klatt, Mike Hale, jeff johnson, Chris Cannon,. Roben Pfetzing, Mike Cordero, Pete Hames, Bobby Garabedian, Mike Garrison and Tommy Walton make the cut. It was Hames who exploded off the line to take the lead followed by Hale, johnson and Klatt. The only pass involving the top runners came on the second lap when johnson slipped by Hale to take over second. From there on out it was like a freight train as the laps ground down. The race was far from boring as the riders did some of the best defensive riding you could see anywhere. At the fmish it was Hames, johnson, Hale, Klatt and Garrison rounding out the top five. The same cast of players went at it again fOT the 250cc Money half mile honors with Terry Singleton, Bobby Garabedian, Mille Hale, Rob Selvy, Tommy Walton Ross Klatt, Chris Cannon, Mike Garrison, jeff johnson and Pete Hames surviving the heats and semi. Again it was Hames who came up with the holeshot followed by Klatt, Hale and Garrison. Cannon got through on the second lap, going to third. One lap later Hale ran into mechanical problems that saw his early demise. Now Garrison went to work on Cannon, and Selvy moved into position to put the pressure on both of them. Cannon held Garrison at Bay until the white flag lap and then Garrison reached way down, found the extra something he needed and came up with third. Hames had another wire to wire romp and his second win of the night. Klatt was second. Cannon held off Selvy for the fourth. The half mile Open Money boys had enough on hand to necessitate heats and a Setni and the 10 who made the cut were Mike Hale, Pat Seigle, Tommy Walton, Rick Reed, Danny Perkins, Rich Plueger, Bobby Sanders, Mille Minnig and john Lundgren. It was Minnig who got the calling and rose to the occasion, going out on top with Sanders and Walton in the 2· 3 spots. Perkins was in fourth and of! the move. Minnig zigged when he should have zagged and it cost him dearly as he dropped to founh. Walton surprised everyone as he slipped into first and staned pulling away. Sanders still had a tenacious hold on second but Per~ins was setting up to make his move. When he did it was in the same vein as Walton's while Walton did a Minnig when he got high in turn four, almost hitting the wall. Perkins shot in low and came down the straightaway with the lock on first. From there on out it was all over with Perkins leading the way, Sanders second and Minnig and Walton third and fourth. Turner nearly trIples at CRC Saddleback MX By Lee Taylor Photo by Thundermountain Photography ORANGE, CA, FEB. 24 The promise of victory, the agony of defeat! Suzuki's Ron Turner all but conquered Saddleback and came heartbreakingly close to a triple win. It would of been a first in the history of the California Racing Club. This was certainly a glimpse of the action to come in CRe's Yamaha Series, presented by Budweiser. The first race fires up Mar. 9 at Saddleback Park. As it turned out. Turner picked up back· to· back wins in the 125cc Pros and turned in a brilliant 2·] ride for the 250cc Pro victory. He had to face the Open Pros in back·to·back races and won his first moto. Then, he met defeat the second time out in a crash. First time around in the 125cc Pros, Dean Cates jumped out into the lead, with Andy Kirker in second and Turner, hustling in third. With Cates pushed back to fourth. Kirker piloted his Yamaha into the lead. Rick Maki brought his Yamaha into third with Danny Westergaard in fourth. Kirker now had the fight of his life with Turner closing hard and fast. Turner finally made his move and slipped on by Kirker as a battle for third went down between Ron Blanton and Westergaard. Kirker and Turner tossed the lead back and forth between them like a hot spark plug with Kirker moving back· into command. With little time left, Turner grabbed it back and led the pack across the finish line. Kirker held second with Blanton snatching back third on the last lap. The second time off the line it was Tim Hines leading the pack followed by Kirker and Bryan jordan. Turner, back in sixth, smoothly picked off rid· ers right and left. He was soon in second and closing the gap. Hines, having trouble with a damaged
