TEN YEARS AGO For pure fun, few segments in Bruce Brown'. classic film On Any Sunday equaled the Elsinore, GP. The Gripsten M.C. through-the-streets race featured Malcolm Smith, Steve Mcqueen and a host of assorted crazies getting rope bums. stuck in the mud, lapped by Malcolm. etc. It's hard to believe that that race was 10 yean ago this week. Malcolm won the Saturday race, for bikes up to 250cc. but unfortunately was put out of Sunday's race when he collided with a spectator crossing the course. Steve Hurd looked to be the winner of the Sunday event. McQueen finished both days. inspite of injuring his foot on Sunday. Skip Van Leeuwen made it four wins in a row at Ascot Park's 100-lap TT. defeating Tom Rockwood, Lloyd Houchina and Amateur Bob Ferro. Van Leeuwen and Rockwood both rode Triumph twins. In the Texas road racing season opener at Austin Raceway Park. Darryl Hunt and Mike Cone were victon in the 250 and 500cc GP classes. respectively. It was announced that speedway racing would be running weekly at the recently completed Antelope Valley Fairgrounds in Lancaster, CA. Among the riden expected to compete were U.S. Champ Steve But, Rick Wooda, California Champ Sonny Nutter, Stu Morley, Don Hawley and DeWayne Keeter. In Bakenfield. CA. the Cyclien hosted a European Scrambles. won by Huskymounted Denny Keefe. Finishing third in the 125cc Novices class was Rick Mean on a Sachs. A Bakenfield resident by that name won the 1979 Indianapolis 500 auto race. Could it be? Southern California speedway racing may have had its roots in TT and flat track racing at Trojan Speedway in South Gate, CA. Among the main event winners on Feb. 6. 1970. were Steve But, Irwin Moon (now the AMA referee for SoCal speedway). Scott Autrey and Larry Shaw. In the fint Fuel and Gas Motorcycle Nationals drag race at Irwindale Raceway. Joe Smith was the Top Fuel winner; his 9.68 clocking defeating Sonny Raalawaki'. 9.81. DAVTONA SPEEDWEEK SPECIALS.
