Desert Hotline just two seconds behind Godfrey tel place sixth overall. Number One Senior in the District, Harry Keast, zeroed the course (56 seconds) to take fint in the A Senior class and third overall. Pete Smith was second Senior A, tieing with Brooks for fourth overall. Ron Fry was third A Senior. Fint in the A 200cc class was topnotch desert racer Larry Roeseler, whoee score was 2: 15. Now imagine how he would have done if he hadn't burned the last secret check on loop two. o 00 O"l .-4 J""'" !Above left) Riel. . at the Proepec:tora' Gold RU8h Enduro had e c:hence to heve their cerda merited by e deHrt proepector, end Ihow off IrlghtJ.lBelow) D-37" 2CIOcc rider Jey Tullia . . . . FEB. :5 Tracy Walters won the first Dis· trict 57 enduro of 1980 as follow· ing tradition. the year began with the running of the Gold Rush .. 30 Enduro, put on by the Prospecton M.C. The 89-mile, three-loop course featured the Prospecton traditional dark, walk-through, handlebar·grab. bing mine tunnel on lap one. Delights on loop two included the traditional downhills, numben one (steep, scary) and two (steeper, scarier). BecaUie of the recent rains. those sandy hills weren't as soft as they were supposed to be wben you fell over on them either. Due to a protest by an early· number rider regarding ambiguity of course marking in the last section of loop two, known check four at the second loop finish was used as an observation check only. The Prospecton are a large and venerable club, so the enduro had the traditional 1a~ number of weD·staffed checks, including numerous tiebreaken. No, there weren't checken lurking behind every bush and rock at every three·mile point. It just seemed that way. Survivon of the third loop reponed that it featured a brisk 50 mph start that went to the fint check and beyond, then a drop to 15 mph through some shabby terrain. They panicularly ap' preciated the rocky downhill with steps, about midway through the loop. Strangely, the event did not result in the traditional clump of Chaparrals in the top finishing positions. It's not clear how this could have happened, but since they have to sit out their enduro, it will be March before they can vindicate themselves. The moist ground provided very good traction and you could go very fast. Sometimes too fast. The District :57 referee, who will possibly be riding the next enduro with his right arm in a sling, has some thoughts on this. Riden who encounter him on the Chapar· rals course later this month should fight their natural instinct to take time out to offer him some sympathy. After all, he brought it on himself. Tracy Walten put in another great performance, achieving the overall win by losing only 21 seconds. Tracy switched from a 250cc to an open· category bike in mid·1979 and since then has placed fint in class in three out of four events. Second in the A Open class was Bob Brooks (1::52), closely followed by Ken Lewis, jr. (1 ::59). You've heard of the Palenske broth· en. Well, Gamer P. garnered fint in the A 250cc class (0:5:5) and second overall. But maybe he'll improve with practice. AA rider Mike Godfrey placed fifth overall with a score of 1::5:5. Second A 250cc was Tony Ankenon, who finished Paul Petenon was second 200cc A. His club, the Cal Poly Penguins, puu on the Hi Mountain Enduro to be held in May. The Hi Mountain will be 2 District :57 points-paying event for the fint time this year. Gary Woodling, an Open category rider in 1979, is riding a U5cc this year. He got fint A 125cc, narrowly beating joe Anatasio, jr. Fint B rider in was B.j. Olson on a 250cc Husky, who lost four minutes. 51 seconds. As B.j.'s ride illustrates. the smaller·bike riden held their own very well in this event. C riden and B Women rode the first two loops only. Among the two-loop comestants, jim Edmondson (C Open) led the way. losing 27 seconds in 55 miles. joe Dion was second C Open and Bob Bonree third, each losing less than two minutes. The fint loop of the enduro was a1Io used as a single-loop course for family endurd riden. In this category, Daniel Crocker was fmt (0:0), Bill Staley second (0::5), and jason Ingenoll thinl (0:9). The Prospecton had just about perfect weatber for their event - clear and not too chilly. This almost made up for last year, when a big mowfall just before their evem made it necessary for course pre-riden to do some snow-shoveling. Even so, the early. number riden had to fo~ their own trails through the strange white stuff in some sections. When these fint riden fmally got to the finish, mostly late, they were mad as anything and all but the bravest Prospecton hid in their vans. This year, the Prospecton' effon resulted in a fine enduro that had something for everybody. The next District :57 enduro will be the Chaparrals' National Champion, ship Coyote Derby on Feb. 24. There are only 12 AMA National Championship enduros scheduled throughout the country this year (down from 24 ill 1979) and the Chaparrrais' event is the only one being held in California. Points for this event will also help t. determine the Golden State Enduro Champions in 1980. • Results Ii. OPEN: 1. TI8CY W-. 10".211; 2. Bob IkooIca 11 :321; 3. MikeGoclhy CAA. ridor, 1:331.
