DiY. 1 clash at Madera. Golden State Series returns to Madera By Paul Castoro MADERA, CA,JAN. 26 40 • California's premier motocross series returned once again to the brisk, desolate surroundings of the Central Valley's Madera Lakes MOIO·Sport Park as the stars of the future battled it out during round four of the Can·Am sponsored $75,000 Golden State Series. Under the sanction of the Continental Motosports Club, it is giving many amateur riders a chance to show their skills as they travel alongside the pros thr.oughout this grueling seven-race senes. With a pea soup fog hanging over the ultra-fast sand track, action was abounding as powerhouse Suzuki campaigner Rick Ryan turned a few heads with a victory during division 2 of the 125cc Intermediate class. After a few weeks of hard luck, Ryan overcame the constant pressurE of Yamaha-mounted Dave Furrer. Moto one saw a seesaw battle between Furrer and Ryan with Allen Silhanek (Yam) and Cory Cantaloupi (Yam) in tow. Ryan used every trick in the book to get past the crafty rider from Dinu ba but it was to no avail as Furrer held the gas 10 the max and claimed the first motowin. "Fly'n Ryan" was primed to go during the second bash as he picked up the moto victory over previous Madera winner Henry Armendariz of Fresno. Furrer placed third behind the Suzuki of Armendariz enabling the young Ryan to cop the overall moto victory. one of the 125cc Division Intermediate class saw Scott Yarbrough (Suz) Slay on top of the series point standings as the rider from Suisun picked up 13 Can-Am points with his third place finish here today. Steve Lacey (Suz) came out on top with his 1-5 moto score beating the 6-3 tally of big Bill Bogdonovich (Yam). Paul Cano (Suz) held onto second in the current standings with a fifth place finish. Tony Tetone, Jr. (TCW) looked sharp with his forceful 1-2 moto score during the 125cc Junior show. Darrin Vanderpool (Suz) and Brucl' Jarsma (Kaw) had to play second fiddle as the speed of Tetone was simply too much for the rest of the division one pack. Division number two saw Rob Engel (Yam) fly home to snatch the win away from Mike Schriefer (Suz). Engel now holds a slim five-point margin over R. Navera with his 65 series points. R&D. whiz kid George Holland continued to dominate the expert segment of the CMC minicycle program. Holland won every moto that he competed in with his only competion coming from Kawasakimounted Don Licon. Holland's main foes in tlte series, Scott Hewatt of Team Honda and Louie Franco from the Crotch Rocket Factory, failed to show today at the Madera circuit which could prove to be costly in the points game. In the 9-11 Intermediate Modified class, Tyson Vohland on a Yamaha . support ride continued his winning ways after mixing with Mike Healey (Suz). Volland leads Healey in the Golden State point standings 72 to 65. Bruce Bunch did it again in the 12-16 Intermediates as the Kawasaki rider from Orange copped the gold in both the stock and.modified groups. Bunch now holds the maximum 80 points and he looks like a hot prospect when he reaches the expert division in the near future. Mark Rouff (Yam) routed the 100cc Intermediates on the tacky sand track with his wire-to-wire moto wins. Andy Nelinger (Suz) and Chris Lewis (Suz) followed the Clovis rider home during both motos, while David Holmes (Suz) also won both motouo gain the laurels of the Junior division. Junior scores saw Pat Wymace (Suz) and Keith Gaymor (SOl) ending up second and third. Jeff Anselmo (Yam), Copper Wallace (Hus) and Carl Nelson (KTM) provided the fireworks during the Open Intermediate shootoul. Anselmo held off the repeated advances of Wallace as he took home a pair of firsts. The word is out that Larry Coleman and his potent Husky are indeed a winning combination as the speedster from Stockton waged a high-class war with Moto Meister Maico rider Rik Nielsen in the 250cc Intermediate Division one race. Coleman duked it with Nielsen and David Behlings (Yam) during moto one, coming home inches ahead of Nielsen. Moto two was again a Coleman affair as he headed off a charge from Stacy Magerian (Hus). The Madera Lakes round marks the half-way point of the Golden State series. With the many prizes available to class winners, the points race will be a hot issue next weekend at Prairie City where the riders will get a chance to test themselves on the tough Hangtown circuit.
