In all, six riders completed tbe lap and a half or about 25 miles. The other riders ftltered in from different directions. Kirk Russell stated that he had never seen a cross country that bad so many downhills and so few uphills. T.he course was laid out in such a way that all the uphills but three were long gradual smootb sections. All tbe down hills were abrupt and severe. The trophies were given out without much fanfare, panly because of tbe rain and panly because everyone was in a hurry to get loaded up and beat the guy witb the Ford LTD out of the parking area and down the road. Everyone knew that if the Ford went out first and got stuck, everybody would be stuck because you couldn't get around bim. Charlie' Smart had him beat in the second moto of the Open race but dropped it. He did a great chase job for one of the older competitors running against the kids. The scene at Riverfront Park on the Feather River just a few blocks from both Yuba City aii'd Marysville was to be the second round of the Hi-Point Racing Products NorCal AMA Winter Series with the sportsman race the last qualifier for the upcoming supercross at Oakland. It became a large lake before the races were over as the three weeks of rain prior to the weekend had melted much of the Sierra snow. The river rose so quickly that the track had to be changm three times as pans close to the river's edge went under. AMA referee Butcb Lee scoffed at a youngster who came back complaining about the track but when checked, it was getting deep with two riders in it up to their axles. The flood control people were releasing millions of gallons every minute out of tbe Oroville dam, and the results were something to seel Mike Beier bested the 125cc Expert class on his Cycle West RM with a 1-2 count over Tim Mulvey and Spoof Pena who won the last moto but had his troubles in the first to come up a 6I, just in front of Jim Cressa on the D &DYZ. Bill Kyer (Suz) had the same score as Beier in winning the 125ccJunior with Guy Santos (Yam) chasing him. Steve Dana (Yam) came in for third with a 4-3 over Jim Olson who won the first moto but suffered a sixth in the last round. A large 125cc Novice crowd helped Kevin Colegrove get six points towards his Junior card with a wire-to·wire moto win on his YZI25.The river was staning to cause some troubles as was indicated by the scores for the rest of the troops. Mark Rockson (Suz) took second with a 4-3 while third went to Rich Workburn (Suz) with an 8-2. Malt Elkins claimed fourth over Ted Stec and Billy Aston. Little brother Tim Aston had no competition for the overall in Mini racing, winning easily on his Team Green KX. Phil Saldivar was the only Junior and did his part while Todd Bercier was first Novice over Gary Smith. At 16, Joey Schlag is way ahead of the game. A former scrambler turned to the bumpy stuff. be is flat going for number one and will likely get it. His KTM machinery is trick and with help from Mike Lane and the Cycle Riders' Supply of Napa, he is the force to con· tend with as most of the top Blue Plates will go off for the big Pro bucks. Joey had little trouble in the 250cc class with big wins for the overall. Alan Thomason brought his Maico in for second with a consistent ride at 2-2 and Neil Goforth took the third place points with a 6-4 over Bob Davis and Steve Coffey. In the Open Expert ranks, Charlie Smart (KTM) had a good dice with the youngster but dropped it just once and had to play catch up at the end. He did that well but not enough to get a cbance to pass and he took second. Don Cody (Mai) took third overall with a 4-3 while fourth was a pair of fives belonging toJohn Volk. Don Bamban took the l00cc Schoolboy win over Sean Scott and Emmit Ramirez. The last race of the day was the combined Open Novice/Junior. I It sounded like Laguna Seca or Daytona as Clark Gardner, Brian Peterson, and Louie Booth took top honors at the first ever Jack· son Creek Road Race held near Jack· sonville, OR. Actually this was no ordinary road race. Instead of a pavement track, four cylinder super bikes and speeds of 180 mph, this road race had a two-mile granite road, speeds of approximately 50 mph and any type of bike the rider wanted to bring. In fact the only resemblance between a real road race and the Jackson Creek Road Race was the name. The two-mile section of granite road runs uphill along a steep canyon which
