I e o 00 .... C') R.,."..:Up Eric McKenna leads Braker in the Open Pro wars. (Below) A broken downtube caused Breker to crash late In the second Open moto, (Above) Ron Turner took the 125cc victory for the second week in a row. reker return to Madera was 'hurting him from an earlier spill in the first 125cc moto and he was too pained to continue. Breker was happy to take over the lead with Turner out of the way 'and quickly began to improve upon it even more. Second spot became a battle royale between McKenna, Lawrence, Staten and Kawasaki's Larry Wosick, now up to join the front runner's battle. At one point Staten was up to third, then bailed off and had to recover from seventh spol. Wosick stalled his Uni-Trak and dropped a couple of pla,·es. as well. W.orking up from a bummer start, Danny Chandler passed_ Lawrence for third and closed on McKenna for second, but the privateer Maico rider held off the Maico factory star ri~ht up to. the finish. Breker had the win ahead of them, while behind it was Wosick keeping ahead of Staten for fourth place. The start of the second 250cc moto went to Dave Taylor. but it didn't last for long as "Lavender" Larry Wosick stuffed his factory Uni-Trak under Taylor's Yamaha and snatched the lead as the first lap ended. As Wosick steadily churned out a six-second lead, .Breker and Staten were knocking themselves up into second spot ahead of Brown, McKenna. Taylor, Lawrence and Mr. Magoo Chander, up from another poor start at the back end of the pack. After six laps Breker was finally able to shake Staten from his tail and tried closing on Kawasaki teammate Wosick. but Larry was able to keep his distance and win the moto, giving him second overall for the day behind Breker. Staten collected third for tbe moto as Magoo moved into fourth place and garnered third overall for the afternoon. Open Pro Rex Staten saw a secure points lead in the series Open class disappear with tbe'start of the first moto. As Maico rider Randy Losh pulled off the holeshot, another rider, Daniel Waller went down in front of Rex in the sweeping downhill first comer and Rex endoed over the top of his bike. With a sprained foot and a twisted set of handlebars, Staten was out of the moto. Despite the injury, Staten would return to endure his way through the second moto and win it. Maicos seemed to be in firm command of the race. with Losh leading the first moto over Pro-Trac Trailers rider Allen Berlutti, Steve Rhyan on the Wheelsmith machine and then Danny Turner on his Bill Harrison Construction-sponsored bike. Working up from the middle of the pack to try and make a little extra money in ridin~ their second class of the day were Danny Chandler. Eric McKenna and Goat Breker as well. By lap three a terrific five-way clash for the lead began to develop between Losh. Rhyan, Turner, Magoo and Breker as Berlutti dropped back. Wild child Magoo. in his usual style of wild abandon. flapped his way around the riders in front of him and into the lead with his 450 factory Maico, leaving a four-way battle for second place as he disappeared off into the distance. But alas, a win for Chandler was too good a wish to come true as a bent swingarm caused the Maico to pitch its chain and put Magoo on the sidelines. With that, Rhyan now had the lead and was pullinll out a slight lead only to have his engme lock up tight with unknown mechanical woes twO laps before the finish. Danny Turner inherited the lead and two laps later the win as Breker fmally worked his way around McKenna for second, then came Heiberger, Klassen and Losh. "Rocket Rex" Staten returned in the second moto to take the start and the lead, but hampered by his sprained foot, the Yamaha factory rider wasn't shaking off Turner. Tim Locey, McKenna and Heiberger as he usually dominated in the Open ·class. Breker was working up from a bad start to slip into fourth spot before long, but McKenna was doing even better as he danced his Maico past both Locey and Turner right up to Staten's rear fender. At the halfway point after'a lap of hard and consistent dogging of the Yamaha factory star, McKenna passed Staten for the lead. Staten kept close to McKenna for three laps. not attempting any serious assaults to get back by until three laps later. Then Staten blast· ed past McKenna for the lead, using all 465cc of brute power at his. disposal to power out of an uphill turn on the outside line and repass McKenna for the lead. The rest of the moto belonged to Staten, with McKenna in second and Turner third. For Danny Turner that was all he needed for the overall win. Breker was in fourth place with one lap to go when the front frame downtube broke on his production 420 Uni· Trak Kawasaki, buckling the bike to the ground and pitching Goat off with an injured ankle. Hopefully Breker's ankle injury is 0 more than 'a light sprain and he should be back again with Staten and the boys to tear up the track at Prairie City OHV Park in Sacramento Feb. 3. • Results 125 PRO: 1. Ron Tumor, 4-1 (Suzl; 2. Jim Holey, 1-4 IVam); 3. Dave Coupe, 3-3 tSuz); 4 . .J
