R.J. Reynolds' series contingency money since 1974. In fact, I finished second in the Grand National Championship points race in 1974, and Corky Keener finished a distant seventh place in that year. I have worked hard and would like my name along with Corky's when this subject comes up again. I hope the Winston people are reading this. You were also wrong in stating Harley-Davidson's b.s. story of the Soott brothers ganging-up on Bill "Verner. I punched Werner. Hank wasn't in the restroom at all. While you were listening to all the stories, I am surprised you didn't print that Hank and I supposedly dragged Werner out of his motel room that night and beat him with chains. This what I was told that Werner first told his wife over the phone. You were further wrong in that the fight was after the San Jose Mile, not ~forel ) enjoyed the article overall but now wonder how much is true. Truly, your weekly newspaper is the best in the East and West, but don't ruin your reputation and mine by incorrect rc;porting such as this. Remember that the battling Scott brothers are professional championship racers, not a gangl Win, lose or draw. GARY SCOTT Springfield, OH Party, anyone7 The closing of desert is like the controlling of guns. Desert riders, like gun lovers, put their hobby above their politics. Often they are single issue voters. Cycle News readers should know then, that Republicans give much more support to motorcycling's imerests than do Democrats. This Republican support is consistent, and it has a long history. The legislative record proves this. The work of Assemblymen Hayes and Chappie is well known. And a large measure of their success is due to the near-unanimous support given them by their fellow Republican Assemblymen. Democrats who support them are the exception and not the rule. I recognize that editors must be wary of charges of political bias; it nevertheless bothers me to see the names of Chappie and Hayes without an (R) after them. It isn't possible to say that motorcycle rights are a strictly bi-partisan issue; the record shows otherwise. Was it a Republican who 2ppointed SI. Joan? Was it a Republican that vetoed AB 1407? The Democrats created what we bemoan. New they stand unwilling to modify it, ~d what they've wrought continues. Motorcycling is under attack and the allack;s made across a broad front nnging from outright motorcycle abolitionists through safety extremists to closers of access to public land. Who are they? Environmentalists, conservationists, ami-industrialists, nogrowtharics - they tend to be liberal, and they tend to be Democrats. Honest observation of r(,cent legislative history bears this out and motorcyclists should be made more aware - of it. Motorcyclists who are also Democrats are those who should be most concerned by this phenomena; they are the ones who can do the most about its correction too. J.B. By providing experienced Yamaha personnel, a good stock of needed. parts and arrangements for purchase against the dealer's account, we believe this annual activity has been a good service to Yamaha roadracers. 0 In recent years we have extended. this parts service at the speedway to privateers or any motorcyclist needing Yamaha racing parts. Cash sales have been permitted. Our dealer network has correctly cautioned us about these growing customer sales. Since we are a distributor, selling only to our franchised dealers, we are adopting the following policy effective this year at Daytona Speed Week (March 2-9, 1980): Racers and mechanics must present authorization* from a franchised Yamaha dealer in order to purchase racing parts from us at Daytona International Speedway. All of these sales will be charged to the dealer's YFDI parts account. Others may purchase a reasonable quantity of Yamaha. racing parts from us at the speedway. But these sales will be on a cash basis at our current published suggested retail price. We hope this policy will be understood by the entire racing community at Daytona. Yamaha. wishes to continue its parts service at the speedway, but we do not want to deviate from our established distributor procedures. *Authorization must be on the dealer's stationery and signed by the dealer owner and!or dealer manager.
