The conference could weD ~ a forum for ORV opponents, with David Sheridan, the author of the CEQ's attack on ORV use, mentioned as a possible keynote speaker. The AMA has submitted a lengthy list of speakers who have ~n involved in positive ORV management. Class B members voted to drop the individual boards for each form of professional racing and instead form a single board, headed by the Commissioner of Professional Racing. The following day the Board of Trustees reelected John Davidson president and named John Hasty vicepresident. A public hearing on a general plan for Millerton Lake State Recreation Area near Fresno and on reclassification of Red Rock Canyon State Recreation Area in Kern County will be held by the California State Park and Recreation Commission in Oildale, Kern County, on Friday, Feb. 8. The proposal for Red Rock Canyon would reclassify it from a State Recreation Area to a State Park. By law, the pri. mary purpose ~f a State Park is to pre· serve outstandlDg natural, scenic, and cultural values, State Recreation Areas, however, are to ~ selected and developed primarily to provide various kinds of recreational opportunities. Rea 88tiol18l trail programs of other state and federal agencies will be discussed at a meeting of the calIfornia Recreatlonel Treils Committee in Sacramento on Feb. 1. The meeting wiH begin at 9 a.m. at the offices of the Sacramento Housing and Redevelopment Agency, 630 I Street. The Committee will discuss a resolution proposed by Motor· cycle Owners, Riders and Enthusiasts. They welcome questions and comments. Based on industry figures for the first II months of the year, 1979 retail sales of new motorcycles are estimated to be 1.1 million units, valued at 1.77 billion doDars. CahiI said the committee will advise him on recreational needs of OHV enthusiasts; acquialtlon, development and operation of State Vehicular Recreation Areas; 8IIoclItIon of OHV funds to federeI and local government agencies for the purpose of providing OHV faciIItles and programs .. well as other Issues concerning OHV u.. In California. Members of the committee would be expected to be knowledgeeble participants In one or more of the poPular forms of OHV recreation, but they must not heve employment or financial interests directly or Indirectly related to OHVs. Committee members would serve without finencial compensation, but trevel expenees would be reimbursed. The committee would meet. probably four times a year, in various .,... of the state to receive comments from the public regarding recreetlonel u.. of off-hlghwey vehicles. The committee would then recommend to the director how the department. through Its OHV recreatlonel progrem, could best mellt the needs of OHV users.
