Garner Palenske snared the CRC enduro title. frustrated by mere seconds in many races but still remains the premier Senior rider of the desert on his Maico. With Gamer's brother Grant taking the open title in 0-37 enduros it was dominating year for Maico. Another bike being coveted by enduro riders was IT Yamaha being given away to the top rider within his class. To no one's surprise Randy Gauvin took it with his only second place of the series. It seemed it was a day for the lightweight bikes as Tim Bridwell brought his I 75cc into second overaU with Ron Webb, heading the Seniors on his 250cc in third. Greg Hite was on the first big bike in fourth overall. Bud Howseman took the true Seniors class (over 50) by dropping only 23 seconds but was beat out by the under 16 crowd through another great ride by Jason Ingersoll on his 100cc losing only 21 seconds. The power of the big bikes was upheld by top B rider Gary Johnson losing 13 seconds but top C rider was once again a 175cc, this one ridden by Tom Wilhelm only 20 seconds down. All these low scores brings up a couple of points for the coming season. After a lot of complaints earlier in the year, the courses were eased up much to the joy of the C riders who make up the backbone of all "family" enduros, but it was to the great dismay of the very competitive A riders since the difference between first and 10th could be a checker's two second lapse. Not .to disparage the fine efforts put forth by the volunteers but rather to take the pressure off them, I would like to propose a plan. Any rider wanting to run for year-end points will have to choose one event a season where he will check rather than ride. Points-averaging or some other compensation could be used, but the point would be to provide enough checkers to man an adequate number of checks and also to have checkers with bikes so the checks could be placed in more strategic locations. This way the courses could not only be kept easy but by good check placement. kept comeptitive enough for the A's. A side benefit might be to give a lot of riders a little more respect for the plight of the checkers; the unsung heroes (and heroines) of the desert. Back to the race at hand. there were a lot of women and kids out today and in the spirit of detente a young woman and young man tied for the win. Michelle Keast and Greg McMahon both led the way. First C rider. right be.hind these two, was Ted Abbott followed closely by Shauna Hopkins and Eric Johnstone screaming his 80cc • across the rollers. r--------------, THE VEl( BEST or Name C itV Stat8_ _Zip_ _ PI....
