IAbovel Jim Holley's 1-4 was good for the 121icc win. IBelowl In the first 250cc moto, Staten couldn't get .ound Lawrence before the flag. nd Staten (twice) there was between him and Lawrence. Over the triple stadium jumps - fol· lowed by a dogleg switchback to the finish line - Sexy Rexy kept his throttle tapped and flew by Lawrence in mid· air to take the lead by half a bikelength going into the switchback. But Rex was set up wrong on the outside line for the first corner and as he tried to cut into Lawrence to pass him on the inside of the next turn, Mark held his line and stuffed Rex into the corner barrier. Lawrence then had the advantage coming out of the switchback and beat Staten by a bikelength across the finish line for the win. A good distance back was Breker in third. then McKenna, Wosick, Team Husky's Mike Loefner, Brown, Mugen/DG/ Motocross Action/Fox/Standard Crankshaft rider Clark Jones. Moto-X Fox rider Mike Marquez and Maico of Petaluma's Dean Wiggins. 'Bike bash mota number two saw Marquez whipping his G model Yamaha into the I{'ad for three laps over Staten. Ron Turner, Husky-mounted Gar.y Ogden and Mike Brown, until Marquez grew tired and edged his way back to sixth place. Wosick had been running fourth on the first lap when he went down in the mud and once his engine stalled, being without a kickstart,'r left him out of the raCe. Breker had pulled a terrible start and then. after nursing a sick gearbox all day. thc' box finally blew on lap four to put the other Kawasaki rider out of the raCe. Onn' Marquez lost th.. karl it was 'Staten out front and in control. Ron Turner moved his production RM up on Rex to presure him for a couple of laps, but then Turner found he couldn't keep matching Staten's blistering pace long enough to try a pasS so he backed off. content with a secure second place behind the Rocket Man. Privateer Mike Brown rode another strong mota to collect third place with his Yamaha, leading Ogden,Lawrence, Marquez, Brell Cross, Jones, Wiggins and McKenna across the line. With 21 malO placings Staten had collected his first class win of the afternoon. Open Pro "Rocket" Rex Staten collected his second class win in the Open class, but not without a lot of pressure from Goat Breker who was also riding his second class of the day and looking as if he liked his Open class 420 Uni-Trak much belle I' than the 250cc model. The first malO was clearly Staten's, though, as he pu lied the holeshOl on Breker. Danny Turner (looking hot his first time out on the Bill Harrison Construction/Hi-Point 400 Maico), multisponsored Cia rk Jones (t his time on the !l60 Mugen), Jerome Heiberger. Steve Rhyan and NorCal CMC class champ Dave Wood. Breker started off the race running some 50 feet behind leader Staten and was closing slowly, only to get stuck on the fifth lap and drop way back. though the two had buill up such a big lead over Turner in the process, that Breker was able to unstick himself and get running again before being passed. Staten cruised in for the mota win ahead of Breker while Heiberger picked off Turner for third, then Rhyan, Jones, Neil Snarr and Tim Locey. The second mota looked like a' Xerox of the first as Staten once again pulled off the lead through turn one ahead of Breker and Danny Turner. But this time, just to make it interesting, Staten endoed his Yamaha on the triple stadium jumps coming round to complete the first lap and found himself back in 10th place once he had shaken all the spinning stars out of his head and was running again. It looked like Breker was holding down a runaway lead which was impossible 10 catch. but Staten was just too crazy to know any beller. Welding hi throllie slide to the carburetor cap. Rex began living up to his nickname as he rocketed ba k up towards the front past Jewell, Hagen, Wood. Snarr, Locey, Jones (sidelined on lap fOUT with a blown tranny), then Turner for second place with just one lap to go. Breker had a 100-yard lead on Staten and there seemed no way Rex could get it all back and pass Goat as well. just in that one lap. But Staten was a rider possessed. He caught Breker halfway around the track and waltzed past to take the lead without any opposition he came up on Goat so fast. As he crossed the finish line Rex snapped his Yamaha up on the rear tire and wheelied past the checkered flag one-handed, flashing the victory sign to claim his second class win of the day, The founh race of the CMC/CanAm Golden State Series will see the racing return to Lake Madera on January 26-27. Sportsmen race Saturday and the go-fast Pros do their thing Sunday on the hilly sand course which should be well dried out from the wet racing two weeks previously.
